The new HBO show, DTF St. Louis, featuring Jason Bateman and David Harbour, is quickly becoming a must-watch. Its unexpected genre twist and a fantastic performance from a supporting actor make it incredibly engaging.
2025 was a great year for Jason Bateman. His podcast, Smartless, continued to be very successful, and he started playing villainous roles with the new Netflix series, Black Rabbit.
David Harbour had a strong finish to the year, as the final season of Stranger Things wrapped up with a satisfying conclusion for his character, Hopper.
The pair is starting a new project in 2026, appearing in DTF St. Louis, which premieres on HBO this Sunday. Viewers in the UK can watch it on Sky or Now starting Monday. Here’s why you won’t want to miss it…
1. DTF St Louis is a truly jet-black comedy

One reason to watch is the show’s outrageous concept – fitting for its provocative title – which pushes both lead actors into unfamiliar territory with its dark humor and unexpected scenarios.
I’m really excited about this movie! It stars Jason Bateman as Clark, who looks like he has it all – a great family and a successful job as a TV weatherman. Then there’s Jim Harbour playing Floyd, a sign language interpreter who’s having a tough time bonding with his son. It sounds like a really compelling story!
Floyd’s marriage is struggling. He’s no longer attracted to his wife, Carol (Linda Cardellini), ever since she started working as a baseball umpire. Meanwhile, Carol is bothered by Floyd’s passion for comic books, especially because they often make him emotional.
While relaxing at a cornhole game, Clark jokingly suggests to Floyd that he try ‘DTF St Louis,’ a website designed to help people find casual encounters.
After considering it, Floyd agrees to participate, and they build his dating profile over dinner. This is when the show takes a surprising and sudden turn in direction.
2. A surprising genre shift changes everything

Now that someone has been murdered, the darkly humorous story shifts into a suspenseful crime thriller, turning into a ‘who done it’ mystery.
The show took a surprisingly dramatic turn. Before this, it felt more like a lighthearted comedy focusing on relationships and sexuality than a serious drama.
It’s especially shocking that the murder occurs halfway through the very first episode. This means the characters are only introduced and start making mistakes within the first 30 minutes, instantly changing everything for them.
The rest of the first episode focuses mainly on the police investigation, but also includes flashbacks that reveal new information and a surprising plot twist.
In DTF St. Louis, things aren’t always what they appear, so viewers can anticipate plenty of surprises over the course of the seven episodes.
3. Richard Jenkins is the show’s secret weapon

Harbour excels at playing unsettling characters, much like his role as Floyd. Bateman perfectly captures the subtly disturbing nature of Clark, and Cardellini hints at hidden depths in her early appearances, making her a character to keep a close eye on.
However, the real strength of the show lies in Richard Jenkins’ performance as Donoghue Homer, the detective investigating the murder.
Will Ferrell has showcased his comedic talent in films like Hall Pass, The Cabin in the Woods, Burn After Reading, and the popular Step Brothers.
He generally plays the role simply as a confident police officer who believes he’s always correct. However, when Joy Sunday’s character, a special crimes officer, appears, it becomes obvious that Homer is consistently mistaken.
The unlikely pairing of these two police officers is a comedic highlight, and Homer’s reactions to unexpected adult content – especially some revealing photos resembling Indiana Jones – are consistently funny and become a running joke throughout the show.
There are plenty of reasons to check out DTF St. Louis when it premieres on HBO this Sunday, March 1st, 2026 at 6pm Pacific Time/9pm Eastern Time. If you’re in the UK, you can watch it on Sky or Now starting March 2nd.
