As a huge fan of both Westerns and martial arts films, I stumbled upon what quickly became one of my favorite action movies from last year – and it’s finally available to stream! It’s a really cool blend of those two genres, setting a classic Western-style revenge story in 1790s Scotland. Basically, it’s about a ruthless group of bad guys hunting down a young woman after they’ve killed her father, but they have no idea she’s incredibly skilled and about to turn the tables on them. It’s got everything I love about both genres – the grit of a Western and the incredible action of martial arts – and it’s seriously underrated.
Directed by John Maclean, known for Slow West, and featuring Jack Lowden (The Hateful Eight, Slow Horses), Takeiro Hira (Shōgun, Monarch: Legacy of Monsters), and Kōki in the lead role, this Western action film was released in June of last year. It continues a classic cinematic tradition of blending Eastern and Western styles, similar to films like The Magnificent Seven, A Fistful of Dollars, and the 2013 Unforgiven remake.

I’m really excited about Tornado! It feels like something completely fresh – it takes the harsh, unforgiving feel of classic Westerns, especially those with truly ruthless villains, and blends it with the incredible skill and unwavering drive of a young samurai. The result is a powerfully intense and brutal story of revenge, and I think it’s going to be fantastic. And now, finally, it’s available for those of us in the U.S. to watch! You can stream Tornado on [streaming platform] and elsewhere. Here’s a little about what it’s about…
In the harsh British countryside of the 1790s, a resourceful young Japanese woman named Tornado (Kōki) gets caught up in danger. While traveling with her father’s puppet samurai show, they encounter a dangerous gang led by the ruthless Sugarman (Tim Roth) and his son, Little Sugar (Jack Lowden). Hoping for a fresh start, Tornado decides to take control of her destiny and steal the gang’s stolen gold.
After a gang murders her father, Tornado finds herself in a desperate fight for survival. This fast-paced story follows her as she uses the Samurai skills her father taught her to escape danger and get revenge. She leaves a path of destruction as she seeks justice for his death.
Despite the excitement of being able to stream Tornado, reviews have been mixed. Critics give it a 66% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, while audiences are even less impressed at 49%. But that might not matter – Tornado is a truly unique action film that you really need to see for yourself. Many who enjoyed it praised its thrilling samurai action and thought-provoking themes, calling it a blend of fury and vengeance, and a fresh take on the classic western/samurai genre. They also highlighted its gritty realism and lasting impact. Overall, Tornado seems to be a hidden gem that deserves more attention in 2025.
