Venom is coming back to theaters, and Sony has a chance to do things differently this time. With a new movie planned less than two years after Venom: The Last Dance, Sony could continue the story started by Tom Hardy’s popular trilogy. However, it would be smarter to take the franchise in a fresh, new direction.
It’s currently unknown if the new movie will continue the story from Tom Hardy’s films or start the Venom story over completely. Regardless, the film needs to avoid repeating the problems of the previous live-action movies. Now is the perfect time to focus on a period of Venom’s history that hasn’t been explored much on screen.
Venom Needs to Return to His Villainous Roots
Now that a new animated Venom movie is in the works, it’s a good opportunity to revisit the character’s origins as a villain. While many Marvel movie fans know Venom as an anti-hero, often called the “Lethal Protector,” he first appeared as a true villain.
During his most popular years, Venom was a villain known for brutally eliminating his foes – and sometimes even eating them. Although he always followed a firm rule against hurting innocent people, he wasn’t a hero. This made him a fascinating character, as he was one of the few villains with a strong personal code of conduct.
Sony’s Venom movies have shaped how many people see the character, often portraying him as a violent antihero instead of the truly terrifying villain he is in the comics. These films haven’t fully shown Venom’s strength by giving him a worthy opponent like Spider-Man. Ultimately, most fans would prefer to see Venom as a formidable villain, rather than a hero with good intentions.
The Venom movies starring Tom Hardy are entertaining, but they don’t really capture the true spirit of the Venom character. Sony shouldn’t keep relying on the same tired humor; instead, they should reimagine Venom for the big screen, staying closer to the character from the comics. A darker, more serious animated Venom film could be exactly what Marvel and Sony need to finally create a compelling version of the character for movie audiences.
Fans Still Haven’t Gotten a Good Venom Movie
The latest animated Venom movie suggests there’s a chance the character could finally get the on-screen treatment he deserves. For almost twenty years, Marvel and Sony haven’t quite nailed Venom’s portrayal, with previous film appearances either significantly weakening his powers or misrepresenting his personality.
Venom first appears on screen in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 3, and the film actually does a good job of presenting him as he was originally conceived. In Raimi’s Spider-Man movies, Eddie Brock/Venom is a truly monstrous villain with no chance of turning good. However, Spider-Man 3 significantly weakens Venom’s abilities, reducing him from the powerful, physically imposing figure from the comics to something less.
This movie corrects the errors of Spider-Man 3, but introduces a fresh set of problems. Tom Hardy’s Venom is physically larger and stronger than the one seen in Sam Raimi’s films. However, the movie focuses on portraying him as a straightforward hero. Despite attempts to label Venom as an antihero, he doesn’t really feel different from a typical superhero. Sony seems more interested in appealing to Marvel Cinematic Universe fans than staying true to the comic book version of Venom, and this ultimately weakens the character.
With a new Venom movie being made, Sony has a chance to bring back the intense, dangerous version of the character that fans originally loved. At his peak, Venom isn’t a grumpy but harmless figure battling his hunger; he’s a terrifyingly strong and unstable being, with only his sense of right and wrong keeping him from total chaos.
As a longtime fan, I’m so thrilled it finally feels like Venom is getting the treatment he deserves! After years of adaptations that just didn’t quite capture the character from the comics, this new animated movie feels like a real chance to get it right and truly honor Venom’s history.
