Bodo/Glimt has been a surprise package in the Champions League this season, upsetting many top teams. Their recent win against Inter Milan has gained them a lot of new fans.
The small Norwegian team is competing in the Champions League for the first time, and they’ve surprisingly advanced to the next round after defeating a major Italian team over two games.
The outcome was a complete surprise, particularly given Bodo/Glimt’s limited financial resources compared to their opponents.
Bodo/Glimt make Champions League history
Bodo/Glimt surprised everyone by beating Inter Milan again, this time 2-1 in Italy on Tuesday. They had already won the first match 3-1, and these results mean they’ve advanced to the Champions League knockout stage with a total score of 5-2.
It’s interesting to note that the town of Bodo has a population of a little over 40,000. That’s small enough that everyone in Bodo could comfortably fit inside the San Siro stadium, with around 15,000 seats still available.
But this isn’t just about the players themselves. Bodo/Glimt’s entire team is valued at around £50 million, while Inter Milan’s squad is worth about £580 million (according to Transfermarkt). To put that in perspective, Inter Milan has spent roughly £84 million on new players this season alone, whereas Bodo/Glimt’s most expensive signing, Albert Grønbæk, cost only £4.2 million in 2022.
Bodo/Glimt earned their spot in the Champions League by winning a play-off round in August. While they didn’t win any of their league games in 2025, they’ve become a surprising force in European football since the new year.
Bodo/Glimt had a strong start to their campaign, defeating Manchester City in January and then winning at Atletico Madrid to secure a play-off spot. After impressively beating Inter, they’ve advanced to the next round, where they’ll either play Sporting Lisbon or have a rematch with Manchester City, offering them another chance to pull off an upset.
The incredible rise of Bodo/Glimt
This is being called one of the biggest upsets in Champions League history. No one expected a team from the relatively unknown Norwegian league to defeat the leaders of the Italian league, but they did.

We’ve witnessed surprising upsets before – like Jose Mourinho leading Porto to a Champions League win in 2004, even defeating Manchester United, and a strong Ajax team beating Real Madrid in 2019. However, a difference in team strength as significant as the one between Inter Milan and Bodo/Glimt being overcome is incredibly rare.
This success wasn’t sudden. Bodo/Glimt had already proven themselves last season by reaching the Europa League semi-finals, where they were narrowly defeated by the eventual champions, Tottenham Hotspur.
In 2022, the team reached the Europa Conference League quarter-finals, impressively defeating Celtic and winning the first leg against Roma before ultimately being eliminated.
This team plays exciting and skillful football, works incredibly hard, and has a well-rounded group of players. They’re clearly not intimidated by any opponent. You can’t purchase the right mindset and determination with money, and Bodo/Glimt have now earned a lot of fans who will be rooting for them in the next round after demonstrating exactly that on such a big platform.
