Man jailed after feeding cocktail to baby hawk for YouTube video

A Los Angeles man is in jail after giving a hawk a mixed drink and recording the incident for a YouTube video.

Most pet owners know that sometimes their furry friends get into things they shouldn’t. For example, dogs aren’t allowed to have chocolate, but they’ll often snatch a piece if they get the chance.

Okay, so I get it – feeding wild animals is a really bad idea. I’ve seen the warnings, and honestly, it’s just asking for trouble. You might end up with a critter deciding to stick around, and that’s not good for either of us! Best to just admire them from a distance and let them be.

Cesar Gustavo Diaz is facing jail time after giving a wild hawk a BuzzBall cocktail to drink.

Man sentenced to 45 days in jail over hawk cocktail video

After a video of his actions became widely popular online, Diaz, a man with a prior felony conviction, received a 45-day jail sentence in Los Angeles County, according to the California Department of Fish and Wildlife.

California and federal laws protect Cooper’s hawks. The California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) stated on February 24th that it’s illegal to capture, harm, or harass these birds, and doing so could lead to criminal charges.

The Department of Fish and Wildlife also stated that Diaz let the hawk go before they could step in, meaning they don’t know what condition it’s in.

In addition to their prison sentence, the convicted person must complete 20 days of community service, attend 24 counseling sessions focused on animal cruelty, and is prohibited from owning animals or possessing firearms for five and ten years, respectively. They also owe $220 in fines and court fees.

People expressed concern for a young Cooper’s Hawk after seeing a video online. One commenter hoped the hawk was alright after its difficult experience. Others questioned its well-being, noting it seemed distressed enough to let someone touch it. Another person wondered how the hawk had been captured, as it appeared confused.

A hawk wasn’t the only animal getting attention recently. Punch, a monkey at a Japanese zoo, has become famous because of how other monkeys have been treating him.
