Travelers trapped overnight on plane after airport closes with them on runway

A Lufthansa flight was cancelled at Munich airport, leaving passengers stuck on the plane overnight because airport staff had already gone home.

Flight delays are frustrating, even when you’re prepared. They can cause you to miss connecting flights, and if you drove to the airport, you might have to pay extra parking fees.

For passengers on Lufthansa flight LH2446 from Munich to Copenhagen, the situation was even worse than they expected.

The flight experienced a significant delay and was finally cancelled around midnight on February 20th, nearly three hours after its scheduled departure. Unfortunately, passengers couldn’t get off the plane and go back inside the airport because it was already closed.

Passengers were left stuck on the plane overnight with very little food and drink, as reported by One Mile At A Time. Since it wasn’t a long flight, the airline didn’t provide pillows or blankets.

Søren Thieme, a passenger on the plane, told Ekstra Bladet that his family was very frustrated after being stuck onboard.

Thieme expressed strong disappointment with both Lufthansa and the airport, explaining that staff seemed to abandon their responsibilities, leaving planes full of passengers parked and unattended. She felt they shouldn’t have simply left work with passengers stranded, acknowledging that flights can be canceled, but emphasizing the need to care for those affected. She even worried they might be stuck and unable to return home for the weekend.

According to One Mile At A Time, passengers weren’t allowed to deplane until the very early morning, though the specific time isn’t known.

Okay, so Lufthansa finally said sorry for everything that happened! They’re saying the reason for the delay and then the cancellation was just really heavy snow around Munich. It’s a bit frustrating, but at least they acknowledged it and pointed to the weather as the cause.

Lufthansa apologized for the disruption, explaining that passengers who were affected had been rebooked on flights departing the next morning.
