Bungie has announced that players experiencing disconnects in Marathon because of server problems will be able to get back any gear they lost.
On February 23th, Bungie detailed how disconnections will be handled in their upcoming shooter game in a post on X (formerly Twitter). They explained what will happen to players who lose connection during a match, as part of a larger discussion of the game’s networking and security features.
The developer explained that players should generally be able to reconnect to a game and pick up where they left off, though they acknowledge this won’t always work.
Bungie outlines disconnect protections for Marathon runs
Bungie says that if you get disconnected from a match, you can rejoin if your connection comes back. While you’re disconnected, your character will stay in the game world, and your teammates can keep them safe until you reconnect.
If you’re playing a critical game and lose your internet connection, it could mean failing the mission. Don’t worry, though – your character will stay in the game world and your team can keep it safe. Just reconnect to the internet and get back into the game to resume where you left off and finish your mission.

If players disconnect due to problems with the game servers, the studio has stated they will try to restore everyone’s initial equipment.
So, Bungie clarified that they’ll only be giving refunds if they’re the ones messing up on the server side. If the problem is with my internet connection or something happening on my own computer, unfortunately, I’m out of luck. It’s good they’re being specific about what qualifies, though!
We’ll only refund gear purchases if the problem was on our servers. Refunds aren’t available for issues caused by your internet connection or problems with your computer.
Bungie announced that it will immediately and permanently ban any Marathon player caught cheating or using exploits. This is part of their commitment to fair play and a zero-tolerance policy for cheaters.
