Last December, Quentin Tarantino mentioned on a podcast that he wasn’t a fan of actors Paul Dano, Owen Wilson, and Matthew Lillard. This casual comment unexpectedly sparked a huge outpouring of support for Dano and Lillard from their fans online. Matthew Lillard described the experience as feeling like he was witnessing his own memorial service, saying it felt like being in heaven and watching everyone share kind words after his ‘death.’ George Clooney even publicly voiced his support for Lillard during an AARP Awards speech, stating he’d be thrilled to work with him.
Lillard was understandably upset by Quentin Tarantino’s comments, especially as a longtime fan. He described it as feeling like a punch to the gut, explaining in December that it was incredibly hurtful. He pointed out that Tarantino wouldn’t say such a thing to a major star like Tom Cruise, or to anyone widely accepted in Hollywood. Lillard felt popular with his fans, but not within the industry itself, which he found both humbling and painful. Fortunately, he now recognizes that he is respected in Hollywood as well.
