Matthew McConaughey worries that artificial intelligence could significantly change the film industry, potentially even creating new award categories at the Oscars, like ‘Best AI Film’ and ‘Best AI Actor’.
Matthew McConaughey is proactively addressing the rise of artificial intelligence, both by using legal channels and publicly sharing his thoughts on its potential impact.
In December 2025, the actor registered eight trademarks with the US government to prevent others from using his voice or image without permission, especially with the help of artificial intelligence.
And now he’s advising other actors to “own your own lane,” or risk industry-wide infiltration.
Matthew McConaughey tells Timothée Chalamet to “own yourself”
I was really struck by something Matthew McConaughey said during a recent talk he did with Timothée Chalamet for Variety and CNN. He talked about being genuinely worried about what the future holds, and it really resonated with me.
McConaughey told his Interstellar colleague that the change was already happening and couldn’t be ignored. He explained that simply protesting or saying it was wrong wouldn’t be enough to stop it, because there was too much profit and efficiency driving it forward. He insisted it was unavoidable – it had already arrived.
Look, I’m telling everyone – protect your personal brand! Seriously, whatever makes you unique – your voice, your look, everything – trademark it. Get it locked down legally. Trust me, you don’t want someone else profiting off of you when you finally blow up. It’s about owning what’s yours and making sure nobody can steal it.
McConaughey explains that without proper legal protections, someone might ask you to appear as a character – like ‘Timothée’ as ‘Marty Supreme’ – at an event, even remotely, like his 50th birthday party in the Bahamas, and expect you to comply.
Look, they can access that stuff, but they absolutely have to ask me first. If they just go for it without permission, they’re breaking the rules, plain and simple. It’s like, get my okay before you even think about it, or you’re gonna get banned!
Fears over an Oscar invasion
Matthew McConaughey believes AI will soon impact the Oscars, potentially creating new categories like ‘Best AI Film’ or ‘Best AI Actor.’ He predicts AI actors will definitely be competing for awards in the near future, possibly within five years.

It will subtly impact our lives in ways we may not even notice, eventually becoming so commonplace that it will be difficult to distinguish from reality.
We’re currently grappling with a huge question: what is reality? It feels more uncertain than ever, which is both thrilling and unsettling. It’s important to be prepared and to define your own path, so you can maintain control when things start to feel unstable.
If you’re interested in the ongoing discussion about artificial intelligence, you might find it relevant to look into the recent controversies surrounding films and shows like Megalopolis, Late Night With the Devil, Thunderbolts, True Detective, and One Piece, as well as the work of director Darren Aronofsky and AI creation Tilly Norwood.
