The classic Pokémon games, FireRed and LeafGreen, will be available on Nintendo Switch and the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 starting February 27, 2026.
The Pokémon Company announced that the popular remakes originally made for Game Boy Advance will be available digitally this year during Pokémon Day. You’ll be able to download and play them on both the Switch and the new Switch 2 consoles right after the Pokémon Presents presentation.
Okay, so Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen came out back in 2004, and honestly, they were a huge deal. They basically took the original Red and Blue games from way back in ’96 – the ones where it all started with Pallet Town – and totally revamped them. The graphics were way better, they added wireless trading and battling which was awesome at the time, and there was a lot more to do even after you beat the Elite Four. It was like getting to relive the classic Kanto adventure, but with a modern twist.
To celebrate their 30th anniversary, these games will only be available to download. Each version will cost $19.99 in the US and £16.99 in the UK.
Classic GBA Pokémon games come to Switch
The online store pages confirm Pokémon HOME compatibility is coming soon. You won’t be able to connect to it right when the game releases, but it will be added in a later update, letting you move Pokémon into Pokémon HOME.
Both games will let players connect locally to trade Pokémon, battle each other, and chat with friends using the Pokémon Wireless Club.
The digital release will also feature the Sevii Islands, a new area with seven islands to explore after you beat the Elite Four. This region continues the story of Team Rocket and lets you catch Pokémon originally found in the Johto region.
Fans in Japan can purchase a special collector’s bundle from the Pokémon Center Online. This bundle comes in a box designed like the original Game Boy Advance and includes a download code for the game, plus extra collectibles inspired by the classic releases.
We can expect more exciting news throughout 2026 as Pokémon celebrates 30 years of adventures!
