Disney princesses are beloved characters in animated films, and many people have a favorite. Whether it’s Ariel, Belle, Rapunzel, or Moana, Disney fans clearly enjoy these stories. That might explain why The Princess and the Frog is currently the most popular movie on Disney+ in the U.S.
According to FlixPatrol, The Princess and the Frog is currently the third most popular movie on Disney+. It even reached the top spot in the United States. Viewers in Jamaica and Mexico have made it the second most-watched film on the platform. However, The Princess and the Frog is more than just another movie.
As a huge Disney fan, I always think of The Princess and the Frog as a really special movie. It was a big deal because it brought Disney back to classic, hand-drawn animation – the style we all grew up loving! Plus, it was amazing to have Ron Clements and John Musker – the guys behind The Little Mermaid and Aladdin – directing again. But honestly, what really makes it legendary is that it finally gave us Disney’s first African American princess, which was a huge moment for representation and a beautiful story.
What Is The Princess and the Frog About?
Tiana is a hardworking waitress who gets a chance to attend a fancy ball thanks to her generous friend, Charlotte. While there, she encounters Prince Naveen, who’s been magically transformed into a frog. Mistaking Tiana for a princess, he asks her for a kiss hoping it will break the spell and turn him back into a human.
Instead of changing Prince Naveen back into a human, their kiss unexpectedly turns Tiana into a frog too. The movie The Princess and the Frog is inspired by both E.D. Baker’s novel The Frog Princess and the classic German story “The Frog Prince.” Anika Noni Rose, known for her role in Dreamgirls, voices the character of Tiana.
The Princess and the Frog Remains One of Disney’s Best Animated Films
When The Princess and the Frog first came out, it didn’t seem like a huge hit, but it eventually made $271 million with a $105 million budget – which was okay for Disney. Even though it didn’t do amazingly well in theaters, it still managed to break some records, and I was so happy to see it nominated for an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature!
As a huge animation fan, I was really excited to see The Princess and the Frog do so well! It actually had the biggest opening weekend of any animated movie in December when it came out, and it earned more overall than films like Brother Bear. Plus, the critics seemed to love it – it currently has an 86% ‘Fresh’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and audiences gave it a pretty solid 74% score too.
I remember when The Princess and the Frog came out – it felt like Disney was back to its roots with beautiful, classic animation and really wonderful music. It didn’t explode in popularity like some other Disney films did right away, but it’s so cool to see how many people are still discovering and loving it now that it’s available to stream. It really holds up, and I’m glad it’s found a wider audience!
