Eric Dane, known for his roles in Euphoria and Grey’s Anatomy, has passed away at the age of 53, according to People magazine. His family announced that he died Thursday afternoon after a battle with ALS. They shared that he was surrounded by loved ones – his wife and daughters, Billie and Georgia, who meant everything to him. Throughout his illness, Eric dedicated himself to raising awareness and finding a cure for ALS, hoping to help others. He will be greatly missed and fondly remembered. Eric was grateful for the support of his fans. The family asks for privacy during this difficult time. He was best known for playing Dr. Mark Sloan on Grey’s Anatomy and Cal Jacobs on Euphoria.
Dane announced he had ALS in April 2025, just before starting work on Euphoria again. He expressed gratitude that he could still work and was excited to return to the set the following week. He later shared that by June 2025, he’d lost all function in his right arm.
Before becoming known as the villainous Cal Jacobs on Euphoria, Eric Dane captured hearts as the charming Dr. Mark Sloan, nicknamed “McSteamy,” on Grey’s Anatomy. He joined the show in its second season and quickly became a popular character. Sadly, his time on Grey’s Anatomy was shorter than most. Both Dr. Sloan and his girlfriend, Lexie Grey, tragically died in a plane crash early in season nine. However, the couple briefly reappeared in 2021 during a vision Meredith Grey had while in a coma, giving them a happier ending where they could be together in the afterlife.
