Then, the all-seeing Eye of Sauron appears, seemingly drawn to the One Ring that Frodo wears. Luckily, Frodo pulls away, breaking the Eye’s influence over the Ring.

Galadriel reveals she understands what Frodo glimpsed in the Mirror – a grim future that will happen if he doesn’t succeed. Overwhelmed by the responsibility, Frodo offers the Ring to Galadriel. She briefly shows him a frightening vision of what she could become if she took it, but ultimately refuses its power. Her expression softens as she reminds Frodo that he is the only one destined to complete this journey. Frodo confesses his fear, prompting Galadriel to deliver a now-famous line.

Does This Quote Exist in ‘The Lord of the Rings’ Book?

Interestingly, the lines spoken by Galadriel right before this are actually taken from a speech by Elrond in The Fellowship of the Ring, where he discusses Frodo’s crucial role in saving Middle-earth – if he fails, there’s no hope.

As a film lover, one thing that always strikes me about “The Lord of the Rings” is how even the smallest character can be incredibly important. Galadriel’s words really kickstart Frodo’s adventure – they give him that initial push he needs. And seeing a glimpse of what’s to come in her mirror? That must have been overwhelming for him, making him realize the sheer scale of the task ahead. It wasn’t just about him anymore. It got me thinking, there’s a line from the Council of Elrond that I suspect heavily influenced that iconic line of hers.

Elrond said, ‘For a time, at least, someone must undertake this journey, though it will be incredibly difficult. Neither power nor intelligence alone will get us very far. Surprisingly, even those who feel weak have as good a chance of succeeding as the strong. That’s often how important things get done: ordinary people step up because they have to, while those in positions of power are focused on other matters.’

Lines like “Small hands do them because they must,” and “This quest may be attempted by the weak with as much hope as the strong,” likely inspired the idea that even the smallest person can make a big difference. This message feels especially powerful today. No matter your size or strength – just like Frodo in the story – you have the ability to change the future.
