Jason Zampella, the creative force behind Call of Duty and founder of Respawn Entertainment, passed away on December 21, 2025, at the age of 55. His final published game was Battlefield 6, which he excitedly unveiled four years after becoming head of the series.
After successfully launching the Medal of Honor franchise, and then creating the massively popular Call of Duty series, along with contributions to games like Titanfall and Apex Legends, Battlefield completed a career that included involvement in all of the major first-person shooter games.
Battlefield 6 was a massive success, becoming the most popular game at launch in the series’ history. However, launching the game was just the first step.
The news of Zampella’s death deeply affected everyone in the gaming industry, especially the Battlefield team. They plan to honor his memory and carry on his passion by continuing to develop and update Battlefield 6.

Battlefield 6 devs address moving forward after loss of Vince Zampella
During a recent interview about Season 2, Battlefield 6 Producer Philipp Girette began by expressing sympathy for the family, particularly the children, affected by an unspecified event.
He was essential to our success; without his contributions, we wouldn’t be where we are today. His past work, especially his impact on the Battlefield series, has been incredibly significant.
After collaborating with Zampella throughout the game’s creation, Girette shared that Zampella is deeply passionate about the Battlefield franchise, emphasizing that ‘Vince is a gamer at heart’.
I remember when Battlefield 6 was first shown. The way Vince spoke about the game made it clear he’s a true gamer – he simply wants to create a great Battlefield experience. That passion is still evident in everyone working on the game today.
We’re all incredibly grateful for everything Vince has done for us and to get us where we are today. We really want to continue building on his work and make him proud of our future accomplishments.
Season 2 marks the beginning of ongoing support for Battlefield 6, building on the legacy of Zampella. The team is dedicated to honoring his vision and maintaining his passion for the game.
Kit Eklöf, an associate producer, shared that the team deeply felt the loss. He explained that the leader had established a strong example, and current leaders are committed to upholding those same values and continuing his legacy.
