The latest episode of HBO’s A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, a spin-off of Game of Thrones, immediately sparked controversy after it finished airing.
The second-to-last episode of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, called “In the Name of the Mother,” includes one of the most shocking scenes of the series so far. The episode showed a deeply disturbing look into Dunk’s (Peter Claffey) history, filled with the typical violence and death seen in the Game of Thrones universe.
The latest episode jumps between a dark look back at Dunk’s past and the increasingly intense present-day conflict. Several characters die by the end, including Baelor Targaryen (Bertie Carvel). Though he made it through the Trial of the Seven, he was immediately killed afterward. Before dying, the prince took off his helmet to reveal a deadly head wound inflicted by his brother, Maekar Targaryen (Sam Spruell).
Even though the episode featured a devastating death, most viewers of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms really enjoyed it. Some called it the best episode of any Game of Thrones show, even better than the original series. While many fans were upset by the character’s death, they still appreciated the strong writing, acting, and emotional impact of the episode.
Viewers on X called the latest episode of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms intensely emotional and devastating. Both audiences and critics praised the show for maintaining the harsh and realistic tone of Westeros and the Game of Thrones universe. While many predicted a certain character’s death, they still found the scene surprising and gripping.
The last episode of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will premiere on HBO on Sunday, February 22, 2026, at 10 PM Eastern Time and 7 PM Pacific Time.
