The new Marvel series, Wonder Man, has cleverly explained a plot twist from 13 years ago that many fans initially disliked. The Marvel Cinematic Universe is known for its surprising reveals, like the connection between Michael Keaton’s Vulture and Liz Allen in Spider-Man: Homecoming, and the shocking discovery that the Winter Soldier was responsible for the death of Tony Stark’s parents in Captain America: Civil War.
I remember when Iron Man 3 came out and everyone was talking about the Mandarin! They really built up Ben Kingsley’s character as this terrifying villain, a huge threat to Tony Stark. It was such a shock to find out he wasn’t the real Mandarin at all, but just Trevor Slattery, an actor! It definitely caught a lot of us off guard, and people had really strong feelings about it, but I thought it was a clever twist.
Guy Pearce’s character, Aldrich Killian, was the true antagonist, using Trevor as a front for the Mandarin in a series of videos. While the Mandarin later showed up in Shang-Chi, some viewers were disappointed by the reveal in Iron Man 3. Now, with Wonder Man, it’s clear that the unexpected direction taken in Iron Man 3 was a smart move all along.
Trevor Slattery’s MCU Development Has Redeemed The Iron Man 3 Twist
The Mandarin is a famous enemy of Iron Man in Marvel comics, so fans were excited to see him appear in Iron Man 3. Although the reveal of Trevor Slattery as an impostor is funny, some viewers were let down by how the movie handled the Mandarin character.
While Aldrich Killian wasn’t a perfect continuation of the character’s original depiction, the Mandarin – also known as Xu Wenwu – in Shang-Chi proved to be a truly engaging villain in the MCU. Though different from the comic book version, his portrayal was captivating and memorable.
The surprising reveal in Iron Man 3 also brought the character Trevor into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and Marvel Studios has since given him a compelling story arc. He began as a source of humor – a clumsy, silly actor who simply took on the role of the Mandarin for a quick profit.
In Shang-Chi, it was revealed that Wenwu’s followers freed him from prison initially to eliminate him, but they kept him on after recognizing his acting ability. Later, in Wonder Man, he came back to the United States and developed a close, mentoring relationship with Simon Williams, becoming a friend as well.
He’s secretly gathering information on Simon for the Department of Damage Control, who are aware of Simon’s abilities. The portrayal of Trevor in Wonder Man is arguably the strongest we’ve seen in the MCU so far, mainly because he plays a substantial supporting character.
Previously, he often played supporting roles meant to be funny. But in Wonder Man, the show treats him as a significant character, even though he still delivers some funny lines. We learn he’s a truly talented actor who is deeply passionate about acting and its background.
One of the most heartwarming parts of the show is watching Trevor and Simon connect through their passion for acting, and Trevor consistently provides good advice. By the end of Wonder Man, he makes up for his past mistakes and ultimately shows that the surprising twist in Iron Man 3 was a worthwhile narrative choice.
Tony Leung was fantastic as a Mandarin in Shang-Chi, and it’s been fun watching Ben Kingsley’s Trevor character develop within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While Wonder Man hasn’t been renewed for another season yet, it would be interesting to see what Marvel does with Trevor and Simon if they return.
