Guess What The Miniature Wife Is About

You’ve probably seen shows about complicated wives before – the good ones, the ones with secrets, the ones who are switched or desperate. But this wife is different. She’s incredibly small – not even as tall as an apple! This is the central idea behind the new Peacock series, The Miniature Wife, and it’s honestly a little unsettling. Elizabeth Banks plays the tiny wife, and Matthew Macfadyen is her full-sized husband, Les. The size difference is clearly meant to be humorous, as there’s a lot more of him than there is of her.

Did Elizabeth Banks’ character always seem so small? No, actually. The series is described as a funny and dramatic look at the power dynamics in a marriage, thrown into chaos by a strange technological mishap. The accident? It somehow shrinks the five-foot-five actress down to the size of a Lego figure. As hinted in the trailer, it all started with her husband, a scientist played by Matthew Macfadyen, trying to grow larger corn.

Though it’s just 30 seconds, the trailer highlights the power dynamics in the film. We see Banks’ character terrified of being small, desperately wanting to return to normal size, and even nearly being harmed by a robotic vacuum cleaner. Meanwhile, Macfadyen seems to enjoy keeping his miniaturized wife contained in a dollhouse. The trailer also offers glimpses of her life as a tiny person, showcasing both the adventures and advantages of her small size – like enjoying a massive piece of chocolate or comfortably relaxing inside a coffee cup.

The preview focuses mostly on the comedy aspects of the show, making it hard to see how dramatic it will be. It feels like a silly, over-the-top comedy – something along the lines of Honey, I Shrunk My Wife! However, in an interview with Variety, actor Hugh Macfadyen hinted at more depth, explaining that the show is about a relationship hitting rock bottom, even when one partner is incredibly small. He described the situation as both ridiculous and surprisingly compelling, and that really comes across.

Also featuring Sian Clifford, Zoe Lister-Jones, and O-T Fagbenle as a friend with a crush on the tiny wife, The Miniature Wife will premiere on April 9th. I’m eagerly awaiting all ten episodes to see if the character manages to grow the corn as planned.
