Last week, I teamed up with Michal Manka from Find Your Next Game to talk about ten promising video game trailers – five chosen by each of us. We each showed the other our picks, explained why we were excited about them, and then secretly scored each trailer out of ten. In the video, we reveal the combined scores to see which three trailers earned the highest ratings.
Ten trailers face off for the crown in a new video series by Find Your Next Game
Being the indie game enthusiast on the Gamepressure team, my colleague Michal and I naturally fell into a division of labor: I covered independent games, and he focused on bigger, more popular titles. Even without making it official, I likely would have gravitated towards indie games anyway. Luckily, I managed to introduce Michal to a few hidden gems, and I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed the mainstream games he recommended. You can see our discussion in the full video linked below.
We’re holding back some of our detailed opinions for the full video, but this is a great chance to share our choices and include links to the trailers so you can watch them alongside us.
Michal’s Picks – DLC, Early Access, and LEGOs
Michal highlighted a couple of interesting games. First, he mentioned the Legacy of the Forge DLC for Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, which came out earlier this month and has a compelling trailer. He also talked about Hades 2, a game that’s been in Early Access for over a year, but is still noteworthy – especially since a recent Nintendo Direct revealed its official 1.0 release date.
Michal shared a trailer for the upcoming season of The Finals, highlighting major improvements to how things are destroyed in the game. With the game being free to play, it’s definitely worth checking out. He also gave viewers a first look at Starfinder: Afterlight, which has the potential to be a sci-fi role-playing game similar to Baldur’s Gate 3, though it’s still early in development. Finally, Michal ended the show with a new trailer for LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight, which was a hit with fans of both Batman and LEGO during gamescom’s Opening Night Live.
Matt’s Picks – Puzzles, Rhythm, and a Roguelike
Everything I showed off in this trailer face-off was a bit different! First, I have a new trailer for *Recur* from Kaleidoscube, which we saw at the Future Games Show last month. *Recur* is a puzzle platformer where you control time. Then there’s *Unbeatable* by D-Cell Games, which my colleague Michal said is similar to *Hi-Fi Rush* from last year – and he’s right! The trailer is fast-paced and energetic, but it’s easy to overlook that it’s a story-driven rhythm game with an anime style.
Okay, so I got to check out a bunch of cool stuff! First, the trailer for Absolum dropped – I actually played it at Summer Game Fest and it’s a really fun roguelike beat ’em up. The best part? It’s coming out October 9th! Then I was hyped to talk about Long Gone, a puzzle game with a cool pixel/voxel art style. It’s a darkly funny survival story set during a zombie apocalypse, and the animations in the trailer were awesome. But honestly, one of the weirdest and most interesting games I saw was Hank: Drowning on Dry Land. It’s a short, clever game inspired by comic books where you play as Hank, a superhero who jumps through time. The catch? You have to create alternate versions of yourself, but can’t run into them or you create a time paradox! It basically turns into a chaotic single-player co-op game… with yourself! It’s wild.
We’ve shared our favorite trailers in this video, but we want to know yours! Let us know in the comments on the YouTube video how your picks compare. And if you have any other awesome video game trailers you think we should see, send them our way – we might include them in a future episode.
