The titles of Fast & Furious movies are notoriously silly. The series doesn’t seem to have any consistent logic when it comes to naming each installment – there’s no real pattern at all. After ten main films and one spin-off, each movie’s title feels completely different. Recently, Vin Diesel announced plans for the franchise to continue indefinitely, hinting at a future he’s calling Fast Forever.
Fast Forever brings to a close the long-running and over-the-top traditions established by the Fast & Furious series, which began in 2001. The original Fast and the Furious was followed by 2 Fast 2 Furious, a film famously known for repeatedly emphasizing that it was the second installment in the franchise.
For the third movie, Universal wanted to begin a fresh direction for the series. To avoid simply calling it “Part 3”, they chose a different title, and the naming conventions continued to become increasingly strange.
The fourth movie in the series simplified things, acting as a fresh start. It’s different from the very first film, The Fast and the Furious. Fast Five toned down the over-the-top action that had become a hallmark of the franchise, but that intensity returned in Fast & Furious 6, which has the most straightforward title. However, to really emphasize the ‘furious’ aspect for the seventh installment, Furious 7 dropped the word ‘fast’ from the title entirely.
Honestly, by the eighth movie, the Fast & Furious series had really jumped the shark – they even used a pun for the title! And then, out of nowhere, it felt like they decided to copy Star Wars and started using Roman numerals, like with Fast X. It was a pretty big shift from where it all started.
It’s silly to give a movie series titles that have no connection to each other, but after doing it for over twenty years, it would be even stranger to start making sense now. Don’t expect the next Fast movie to change this pattern, even if it’s annoying.
What to Expect From Fast and Furious 11
Though Fast Forever doesn’t stray from the series’ typical naming style, it promises to be a different kind of Fast & Furious movie. Vin Diesel has shared some information suggesting the film will move away from the recent focus on spy adventures and offer a more realistic conclusion. It’s still unknown how this shift will address the unresolved cliffhanger ending of Fast X.
Fans might be surprised to learn this, considering Dante was the main villain in Fast X and won against Dom Toretto and his team. It’s unclear if the next film, Fast Forever, will address this cliffhanger or start a completely new storyline, ignoring the events of Fast X. There’s also a possibility that the upcoming Hobbs & Reyes movie will be changed to give Reyes’s story a proper conclusion.
Okay, so from what I’ve gathered, the new Fast & Furious movie seems totally over the top, but honestly, that’s exactly what I expect! Let’s be real, this franchise has never been about making sense, and that’s a huge part of why we all love it. If Fast Forever can just keep the action moving and be a blast, it’ll probably be just as popular as the last ten wonderfully crazy installments.
