DOOM dev responds after fan with cancer shares he is spending final weeks playing the game

A Reddit user who is a fan of the video game DOOM recently shared that he’s in the hospital and may not have much time left. He said his biggest wish is to play the newest DOOM game, and the game’s director at id Software saw his post and responded.

In late January, a user from Canada shared a moving story on the r/Doom subreddit. He explained that he’s been fighting cancer since 2022 and recently learned his time is limited. While hospitalized in Toronto, he was granted a special wish by his doctors: to play the new DOOM game. The hospital was able to get him a PS5 and a copy of the game.

The fan has been a DOOM fan since 2016 and said the games helped him cope with tough times. He was previously unable to afford the newest installment, so finally getting to play it was particularly special for him.

He shared that playing Chapter 4 felt incredibly fun, like getting back to the action-packed style of gameplay he loved as a ‘Demon Slayer.’ He also admitted he wasn’t sure if he’d be around to play any future updates to the game.

He concluded his message by expressing gratitude to the developers at id Software, acknowledging their creation of a game series that deeply influenced his love for first-person shooters. He finished with the franchise’s famous catchphrase: “Rip & Tear.”

The post became popular quickly and eventually reached the game director of DOOM. Hugo Martin responded to the fan directly from his official Reddit account.
