How huge Egg reveal in Knight of the Seven Kingdoms “raises the stakes” for Prince Aerion

In the third episode of ‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms,’ a major revelation dramatically alters the storyline for Prince Aerion, according to actor Finn Bennett.

Set between the storylines of House of the Dragon and Game of Thrones, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms shares connections with both series.

The series stars Peter Claffey as Ser Duncan the Tall and Dexter Sol Ansell as his young squire, Egg, in the first two episodes. It’s based on the ‘Tales of Dunk and Egg’ stories by George R.R. Martin.

The end of Episode 3 reveals a major character’s true identity, so be warned – spoilers follow! We’ll explain everything and share what the actors Ansell and Bennett thought about the big reveal.

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms twist explained

A key hint about Egg’s real identity appears around the middle of Episode 3, called ‘The Squire.’ A fortune teller tells the boy he will become king, but then adds a chilling prophecy: he will die in a fire, his body will be consumed by worms, and those who know him will celebrate his death.

Dunk laughs it off, but a clearly concerned Egg demands “Why would she say that?”

The episode concludes with a confrontation: Prince Aerion Targaryen attacks Dunk and is about to injure him, but Egg intervenes and tells him to stop.

“Don’t touch him!” Egg commanded. When Dunk cautioned that the guards might harm the boy, he confidently replied, “They won’t, and if they try, they’ll have to answer to my father!”

“You have some nerve!” Aerion snapped, glaring at Egg. “What did you do to your hair?” Egg, who had shaved his head, replied, “I cut it all off, brother. I didn’t want to look like you.”

So, the boy known as Egg is actually Prince Aegon V Targaryen, the younger brother of Aerion and son of Prince Maekar.

How Dexter Sol Ansell reacted to Egg’s big moment

Ansell shared with Entertainment Weekly that when he first learned his character was a Targaryen, he was completely in the dark. ‘I had no idea who or what a Targaryen was – it was just a name I didn’t recognize,’ he said. Luckily, his parents filled him in, and he was thrilled to discover his character had royal lineage.

He described what it’s like to feel like a Targaryen, saying it feels “cool” and like being a dragon – wanting to leap out a window and breathe fire. He admitted he hasn’t seen Game of Thrones, but believes the Targaryens are the best house.

Ansell explained that his character, Dunk, is currently very angry with Egg and actively dislikes him. Egg, in turn, is unsure how to react to Dunk’s hostility.

He always anticipated this moment, but it still deeply upset him. He fears he’ll never be with Dunk again, believing he’s missed his only opportunity. It seems he’ll be forced to return to the Targaryens, where he’ll be held securely, preventing any future escape.

Finn Bennett on how reveal raises the stakes for Aerion

Finn Bennett, who plays Aerion, told The Hollywood Reporter that the recent reveal is a game-changer for his character. He explained that Aerion was initially uninterested in the tournament, feeling he didn’t belong and was even embarrassed to be there.

Now that Dunk attacked him on stage, he has a reason to punish someone publicly. This man challenged authority, and Dunk intends to make a harsh example out of him.

When the character tells Dunk, ‘If you’ve got nothing else to say,’ and Dunk stays silent, the scene becomes dull. It feels like he should elaborate, push the conversation further. Instead, it’s like the character is just trying to publicly shame the other person and move on.

When Egg unexpectedly enters the tent, the situation becomes much more intense, and Aerion finds himself with a chance to act boldly and make a real impact.
