The new series, American Blue, follows Brian “Milk” Milkovich as he goes back to his hometown of Joliet, Illinois. He aims to help a struggling police department and, in the process, find a way to redeem himself. Like The Pitt which offered a detailed look into the world of medicine, American Blue will deeply explore the lives of those working in law enforcement.

The connection to The Pitt isn’t just a coincidence. HBO officials have explicitly compared the two shows, as stated by Sarah Aubrey, Head of Max Original Programming.

Just like with our plans for The Pitt, we aim to create seasons that are long enough for audiences to really immerse themselves in this new world over several episodes and revisit it each year. We’re excited to see Jeremy Carver’s concept for American Blue become a reality.

I think the 15-episode season was a sweet spot – it let them deliver satisfying, case-of-the-week stories and build something deeper, which is probably why everyone loved it so much.

Based on early comparisons, the new show American Blue appears to be a refreshing change. It seems to be moving away from the tired, formulaic approach common in many police dramas, and instead focusing on higher-quality storytelling. This kind of shift is unusual for the genre, suggesting American Blue could revitalize it.
