Twenty-five years ago, in 2001, two fantasy movies came out that started incredibly popular film series, making it a landmark year for the genre. Fantasy, like that in The Lord of the Rings, has long been a powerful way to tell imaginative stories. J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone first appeared in the U.K. in 1997 and quickly became a worldwide success. Though Lord of the Rings was originally published much earlier, both it and Harry Potter had their first movie adaptations released in 2001, and both series continue to be beloved by fans a quarter-century later.

Both The Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter became huge successes in the 21st century, and their first movies actually came out very close together. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone was released in the US on November 16th, followed by The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring on December 19th.

Both movies were successful, but Harry Potter earned more at the box office. The Sorcerer’s Stone brought in $90 million domestically on its opening weekend and ultimately grossed $974 million worldwide, becoming the highest-grossing film of 2001. It even surpassed $1 billion in 2020, boosted by a re-release in China, as reported by Variety.

The first movie in The Lord of the Rings trilogy, The Fellowship of the Ring, earned over $47 million in its opening weekend in the US and Canada, and ultimately made over $868 million around the world in theaters. Although it didn’t make as much money as the first Harry Potter film, it received more recognition, winning more awards at the Academy Awards than Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone.

The first Harry Potter movie received three Academy Award nominations – for Art Direction, Costume Design, and Original Score – but didn’t take home any wins. In contrast, The Fellowship of the Ring earned 13 nominations and won four Oscars: for Cinematography, Makeup, Original Score, and Visual Effects.

Both The Lord of the Rings and other fantasy series are important, but they’ve each made a different kind of impact. Both Harry Potter and its counterpart continue to be incredibly successful and are growing even further. Harry Potter is a major attraction at Universal Studios parks around the globe, with new content like the Fantastic Beasts movies and the play Harry Potter and the Cursed Child constantly being added. Plus, the original story is getting a fresh take with a new TV series on HBO.
