Just as Dakota Fanning is experiencing a comeback in her career, a lesser-known thriller she starred in is leaving its free streaming platform.
Directed by Paul McGuigan (known for Lucky Number Slevin), Push features Dakota Fanning as Cassie Holmes, a 13-year-old whose mother is a powerful psychic held captive by a secretive group called The Division. This organization captures people with special abilities and turns them into soldiers. Cassie seeks help from Nick (Chris Evans), a man with telekinetic powers and a troubled history with The Division, to locate a woman who holds a new drug that could shift the balance of power in the conflict between psychics and the agency.
After almost 17 years of being available for free, the movie Push will no longer be streaming on Tubi starting January 31st. Viewers will still be able to find it on Hoopla and Kanopy, which are streaming services offered through public libraries.
Featuring Camilla Belle, Djimon Hounsou, Ming-Na Wen, and Cliff Curtis, the film Push received mostly negative reviews when it came out. Critics found the story confusing and felt it took ideas from other shows and movies like Heroes and Fringe. Though audiences were also divided, the film still earned $48.9 million at the box office, more than its $38 million cost to make. Over time, however, it has gained a dedicated fan base.
One reason it took a while for people to fully recognize his talent is that Chris Evans starred in Push during a transitional period in his career. This film came between his earlier work with the Fantastic Four movies and his breakthrough role as Captain America in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Around the same time, in 2009, he also appeared in the action-comedy The Losers and Edgar Wright’s Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, both of which are now gaining a wider audience and more appreciation.
The sale of Tubi is happening at a notable time for Chris Evans and John Fanning. Evans had previously finished playing Captain America with Avengers: Endgame, but he’s now returning to the role for both Deadpool & Wolverine and the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday.
Dakota Fanning has been incredibly busy lately, experiencing some of the most successful years of her career. Following positive reviews for the historical thriller The Alienist, she reunited with Denzel Washington on The Equalizer 3 and received Golden Globe and Emmy nominations for her work in the Netflix series Ripley. Notably, she also launched a production company with her sister, Elle, who was nominated for an Oscar. Together, they’ve produced several documentary series and are currently working on a new drama for Apple TV called Margo’s Got Money Troubles.
Now that both Evans and Fanning are still well-known actors, it’s worth watching to see if any streaming service picks up the rights to Push after it left Tubi. Since Lionsgate owns the film and also owns Starz, that seems like the most probable place it might end up. However, because it was previously available on a free streaming service, it could also appear on ad-supported platforms like Prime Video or The Roku Channel. Currently, if you want to watch Push, you’ll need to rent or buy it online.
