The popular Monsterverse franchise will continue with Godzilla X Kong: Supernova in 2027, pitting Godzilla and Kong against the space villain SpaceGodzilla. While the previous two films featuring both monsters were enjoyed by fans, they mainly focused on Kong’s story. Supernova seems to be giving Godzilla a more central role, though Kong will still be a key part of the adventure.
Even though the team-up movies between Godzilla and Kong have done well, fans still want to see individual movies focusing on each monster. Godzilla has a lot of established enemies that could be used in new films, thanks to licensing from Toho. However, Kong has more opportunity for exciting new stories with original monsters like the Skar King or Skull Devil, rather than just pitting him against well-known foes like Gigan, Hedorah, or Titanosaurus.
The Monsterverse has already established a fascinating Titan that would make a great opponent for Kong in a movie. While the Monsterverse films are enjoyable, some of the most compelling stories and creatures come from other sources, like comics and novels. This includes a particularly unique and frightening threat originating from Skull Island.
The Fungoid Titan Yuggoth Can Control Other Monsters
I’ve been following Kong’s story after the Skull Island animated series, where he had this incredible fight with the Kraken and managed to win, but it really took a toll on him – he was poisoned and weakened. Now, things are getting even more complicated! A new Titan has shown up on Skull Island – this creature called Yuggoth, who can change shape and is covered in fungus. We just saw Yuggoth return in the Escape from Skull Island series, and it looks like he’s going to be a major threat!
Named after a creature from Lovecraftian horror stories, Yuggoth is a dangerous foe because it can poison and control the animals of Skull Island with spores released from its body. Though these spores aren’t as effective against larger Titans like Kong, Yuggoth is still a match for Kong in terms of size and speed. It can even regrow lost limbs, as seen when Kong tore off its leg during a fight.
Yuggoth, a creature resembling a living fungus from the Earth, wouldn’t stand a chance against Godzilla’s atomic breath. However, he’s an ideal opponent for Kong, presenting a real danger to the giant ape. The story is set in the 1990s, following the events of Kong: Skull Island and preceding Godzilla’s return in 2014. Currently, within the narrative, Yuggoth is still alive.
The fungal Titan lives on Skull Island and seems to be a creation of the island itself. If a gateway to the Hollow Earth opened, he could reach Kong in the present day, and gain many more dangerous creatures to control and send against him. This Titan, known as Yuggoth, would be an ideal villain to focus the story on the Hollow Earth, allowing for greater exploration of that world in future films.
Yuggoth Makes For An Intriguing Godzilla X Kong Villain (Pending A Power-Up)
Yuggoth could become a serious danger to Godzilla and Kong, but he’d need to evolve first. Currently, in the 1990s, he isn’t strong enough to control Titans like them. However, if he could gain the ability to control some of the smaller Titans, he would pose a genuine threat.
Yuggoth doesn’t need to directly confront Godzilla and Kong. Instead, he can command other Titans – like Behemoth, Amhuluk, the frightening Abaddon, or even undiscovered monsters such as Leviathan or Bunyip. While Toho has often used mind control with its monsters, it’s usually been through aliens. Having a Titan control others using its own spores makes much more sense within the Monsterverse’s story about the Hollow Earth.
