Absolute Batman #16 Review: Wonder Woman’s Surprising DC Romance Teased

The first team-up between Batman and Wonder Woman happened in December 2025 within the Absolute Universe. This month’s Absolute Batman #16, written by Scott Snyder with art by Nick Dragotta, continues that story. This time, there’s a hint of romance, suggesting Steve Trevor might face competition for Wonder Woman’s affections.

I’ve been following the Absolute Batman series, and issue #16 really hit me hard. It’s heartbreaking to see Bruce Wayne grappling with the aftermath of his fight with Bane – his friends are seriously hurt, and some are even… changed. Seeing him visit Oz Cobblepot and Harvey Dent in the hospital was so tense. You can feel his guilt and desperation. It’s amazing how he turns to Wonder Woman for help, remembering the debt she owes him from their earlier adventure. He’s desperate to find a way to restore Waylon, his friend, after those scientists at Arkham turned him into… well, something resembling a crocodile. It’s a really powerful story about responsibility and friendship.

Diana has offered to help Bruce, but warns him they’ll need to travel to the dangerous Underworld to find what he’s looking for. The journey will be difficult and full of risks. But for Batman, saving his friend is worth any sacrifice.

Absolute Batman #16 teases Bruce/Diana romance

Scott Snyder is a master of action-packed storytelling, and he clearly understands Wonder Woman and the rich mythology of the Absolute Wonder Woman series. But what’s truly compelling in this issue is the subtle development of a connection between Batman and Wonder Woman.

Bruce and Diana have a history of hinted-at romantic tension, notably in the DC Animated Universe. The recent portrayal maintains that same delicate approach, relying on meaningful glances and unspoken feelings as their connection deepens. However, this time the setting and focus are more aligned with Diana’s interests and experiences than Bruce’s.

Even the creature they’re hunting realizes there’s a link between Wonder Woman and her companion. He boasts that killing them both would be satisfying. This causes both heroes to immediately (and somewhat defensively) insist they aren’t a couple, all while fighting him.

Nick Dragotta’s artwork is consistently excellent, and he once again delivers in this issue. He’s proven throughout the series that he can beautifully depict both strange horror and grand, gothic settings. That skill translates perfectly to the bleak landscape of Diana’s Underworld, effectively showing how lost and unprepared Bruce feels when facing what he believed were just myths. While Bruce doesn’t outwardly show fear, Dragotta subtly conveys his unease through his detailed artwork.

Absolute Batman #16 is a fantastic issue, but you’ll get even more out of it if you’ve already read the Absolute Wonder Woman team-up story. Some of the subtler moments showing the developing connection between Batman and Wonder Woman might be missed otherwise. Still, it’s a top-tier comic and well worth reading.
