Chris Hemsworth has become a major streaming sensation.
Chris Hemsworth’s new cyber-thriller is performing well on HBO Max, despite receiving mixed reviews from critics (currently at 33% on Rotten Tomatoes). While known for playing Thor in the Marvel films, Hemsworth has also taken on diverse roles in other projects, including action-packed movies like Furiosa: A Mad Max Story and voice work in Transformers One.
Michael Mann, the director behind films like Heat and Ferrari, also made a 2015 action thriller called Blackhat. The movie features Chris Hemsworth as Nicholas Hathaway, a hacker who gets a chance at freedom if he helps track down a dangerous cybercriminal. However, critics didn’t respond well to the film when it came out.
According to FlixPatrol, the movie Blackhat is now a hit on HBO Max around the world. Data from January 30, 2026, shows it’s currently ranked 8th globally, thanks to viewers in many different countries. It even reached Number 3 in ten countries, including Mexico, Peru, the Bahamas, El Salvador, Ecuador, and Haiti.
Look, let’s be honest, Blackhat didn’t exactly win over most critics. But I have to admit, Michael Mann’s name attached to it definitely got people talking, and even landed it on a few ‘best of the year’ lists. It wasn’t the story that impressed anyone – nearly everyone found it weak – but Mann’s visual style? That’s where the film really shone. The cinematography and how each shot was composed were genuinely impressive, and that’s what saved it for a lot of us.
Despite this, the movie has become popular worldwide, probably because Chris Hemsworth is a well-known actor and the film explores an interesting idea that’s different from his usual action movies. It also helps that he’s returning for Avengers: Doomsday, a highly anticipated sequel where he’ll be reunited with Chris Evans.
Despite winning awards for acting and directing at the Hauding Awards, the movie Blackhat wasn’t successful in theaters, making only $19.7 million on a $70 million budget. However, it’s recently gained more attention thanks to its popularity on streaming services, eleven years after it first came out.
While not considered one of Chris Hemsworth’s best films, Blackhat is surprisingly popular right now, especially considering it’s only available to stream on Prime Video in the United States. Its continued success worldwide is quite remarkable given these limitations, proving it’s a real streaming hit.
