The third episode of ‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’ suggests a change in the show’s direction as a new Targaryen antagonist, Prince Aerion (Finn Bennett), prepares for action. This will likely feel familiar to viewers of ‘Game of Thrones’.
The HBO series has offered a more relaxed and enjoyable experience compared to its epic predecessors, Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon. It follows the adventures of Ser Duncan the Tall, a wandering knight played by Peter Claffey, and his young companion, Egg, portrayed by Dexter Sol Ansell.
Inspired by George R.R. Martin’s Dunk and Egg stories, this tale is more focused and includes a lot of humor, even silly jokes. However, it’s still part of the larger world of the show, as it takes place during the Targaryen dynasty’s reign.
The second episode of ‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’ features several of the royal family, many of whom have silver or white hair. We also meet Aerion Targaryen, who appears to be the main villain. Be careful, as this may contain spoilers!
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Episode 3 trailer hints at familiar kind of cruelty
It’s still unclear just how villainous Aerion will become, but the preview for Episode 3 of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms hints at a troubling shift in the show’s direction. Many Game of Thrones viewers are already drawing comparisons between him and the notoriously cruel King Joffrey.
The preview begins with a cheerful mood, but turns serious when Raymun asks Dunk if he’s found someone to fight. Dunk responds that he and Aerion are evenly matched.
Raymun cautions that the Targaryens were oppressive rulers who destroyed lands and forced people into slavery, even calling them outsiders who practiced incest. These warnings are shown alongside scenes of Finn Bennett’s character preparing for battle in dark, intimidating armor.
One YouTuber noticed that the video includes scenes of Dunk near a bonfire, and a shot of Tanselle (Tanzyn Crawford) appearing when the lyrics “enslaved our people” are sung.
Based on the trailer for the upcoming weeks, it appears she will fall under Aerion’s control, potentially leading to a crisis similar to the one Ser Dunk faces later in the narrative, according to sources.

After that, there are a few more clips. The YouTuber explains that the change in the show’s overall mood will likely happen when the tournament begins.
After that, Aerion will likely use his power to attack Tanselle. The trailer shows Aerion injured, suggesting Dunk will be caught up in the aftermath.
As a huge fan of George R.R. Martin, I’ve noticed a pattern: nobody in power likes to be embarrassed or appear weak, especially not in public. It’s a really key thing to understanding how characters react in his stories!
The sneak peek has sparked mixed reactions, with one viewer saying that seeing Aerion in his dark armor caused them the same level of anxiety as watching Joffrey.
Finn Bennett is already perfectly portraying the unsettling intensity of the Targaryen family, and it’s clear he’s been eager to find someone like Dunk to torment. This upcoming trial is shaping up to be truly unforgettable!

Another quipped, “I am sure this Aerion guy is a well adjusted, proper fellow.”
Many viewers have noticed similarities between Aerion and Joffrey, and some believe Joffrey’s storyline foreshadowed Aerion’s fate in Game of Thrones.
He once showed Margaery Tyrell where Aerion Targaryen, nicknamed ‘Brightflame,’ was buried. He explained that Aerion believed drinking wildfire would transform him into a dragon, but it didn’t work.
We don’t yet know if this will actually happen in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.
Both Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon took liberties with George R.R. Martin’s books, changing the order of events and how certain characters acted. Because of these changes, information you might think you know from one show might not be accurate in the other.
The third episode of ‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’ will be available on HBO and HBO Max starting February 1st. Before then, you can find out why dragons aren’t featured in the series, explore theories about Dunk’s connection to Hodor, and discover other new shows coming to streaming platforms this month.
