Now is an exciting time for Evan Peters fans! He’s teamed up with Ryan Murphy again for the new series The Beauty, which is based on a comic book, and he also appeared in a recent science fiction reboot.
Despite a disappointing start in theaters, the sci-fi reboot Tron: Ares is now a chart-topping success, and is currently performing very well. This marks another collaboration with actor Murphy, following their previous work on Monster and American Horror Story. According to FlixPatrol, Tron: Ares has remained near the top of the charts for over two weeks.
I was so excited when Tron: Ares finally hit theaters on October 10th! It didn’t take long to come home – it was available digitally on December 2nd, and then you could rent it pretty quickly. But the best part? It dropped on Disney+ on January 7th and instantly became a huge hit! It’s been at the top of the streaming charts ever since, which is awesome – everyone’s loving it!
After a brief dip in popularity, Tron: Ares returned to the top spot in the U.S. on January 25th. The sci-fi remake continues to be the most-watched movie on Disney+ worldwide.
Disney has been trying to build a successful Tron movie series since the 1980s. While the films were visually impressive for their time, they haven’t resonated with critics or viewers due to weak characters and uncompelling storylines.
The original Tron film, released in 1982, showed viewers The Grid – a virtual reality world inhabited by intelligent computer programs. It followed Kevin Flynn, a programmer and game developer played by Jeff Bridges, as he gets trapped inside and tries to find a way out. Jeff Bridges returned to play Flynn in the subsequent films, Tron: Legacy (2010) and Tron: Ares.
The new science fiction installment featured a super-intelligent program created by Julian Dillinger, but it ignored the character Sam Flynn – the son of Kevin Flynn from Tron: Legacy – and instead focused on a fresh cast of characters.
The film featured a talented cast including Greta Lee as Eve Kim, the CEO of ENCOM, Evan Peters as Julian Dillinger, Jodie Turner-Smith as Athena, Gillian Anderson as Julian’s mother, Elisabeth Dillinger, Arturo Castro as Seth Flores, and Cameron Monaghan as Caius.
The movie centers around Ares, a highly advanced AI program, who enters the real world on a risky mission – representing the first time humans will come face-to-face with artificial intelligence.
Tron: Ares Didn’t Save the Franchise
Despite not being the worst-received installment in the sci-fi series, the reboot has a mixed reception. Audiences loved it, giving it an impressive 84% approval rating – the best in the franchise! However, critics were less enthusiastic, scoring it at 53%. Its rating on IMDb is currently 6.3 out of 10, which is the lowest for any film in the series.
The original Tron film from 1982 earned a 60% approval rating from critics and 69% from audiences, with a score of 6.7/10 on IMDb. Its sequel, Tron: Legacy, received a less favorable “rotten” rating of 51% from critics, but still scored 64% with audiences and 6.8/10 on IMDb.
Despite positive feedback from viewers, the movie was a financial disappointment. With a production budget between $180 and $220 million, it only earned $142.2 million at the box office, falling far short of breaking even.
