The first version of the Resident Evil 4 Remake included an opening chapter where players controlled Ashley Graham as she tried to escape her captors before Leon S. Kennedy showed up.
A YouTube video by modder Thekempy reveals that remnants of what’s known as Chapter 0 still exist within the finished game, but they’re incomplete and can only be accessed using modifications.
Kempy’s video mostly guesses at what the beginning of the Ashley game would have been like. However, he found some leftover instructions for enemies and cutscenes, which helped him figure out how it probably would have unfolded.
Early in Resident Evil 4, Ashley tries to hide from villagers infected with Las Plagas, but she’s caught and held captive. This is where Leon first discovers her.
Remnants of the sequence can still be seen in pre-release trailers for the Remake.
Why ‘Chapter 0’ was cut
It’s unclear why this scene was removed, but one theory suggests that because Resident Evil 4 is designed to be replayed, a very linear, scripted stealth section at the start might not have fit with Capcom’s overall vision for the game.
It’s always fascinating to learn about the game development process – seeing how games are created and discovering content that didn’t quite make it into the final version.
The critically praised Resident Evil 4 Remake came out in 2023. The next major installment, Resident Evil Requiem, will be available on February 27, 2026, and features both Leon S. Kennedy and a new character named Grace Ashcroft.
