As a big Dragon Quest X fan, I was excited to hear about the huge Version 8 update, “Jikuu no Mayoi Ko-tachi” (Children Lost in Time and Space), coming on June 25th! But Square Enix also announced some changes that are a little sad. They’re shutting down the free Kids Time access and getting rid of the browser version of the game. It’s a mixed bag of news, but I’m still really looking forward to the update!
Kids Time was a feature that originally let children play the game for free during specific hours: weekdays from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM JST and weekends from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM JST. When the game first launched in 2012, it was designed for kids. However, after more than 13 years, Square Enix noticed that many of those original child players are now adults and are mostly using paid subscriptions to play.
Square Enix hasn’t explained why it’s shutting down the browser version of the game, which could be played on computers and mobile devices. They’re advising players to create a new Square Enix account to save their progress and continue playing on the PC, Switch, or PS4 versions instead.
Beginning June 25th with Version 8, Dragon Quest X will be playable only on Windows PC, Nintendo Switch, and PlayStation 4. A subscription will be required for all players to continue enjoying the online game.
