Sony has ended its lawsuit against Tencent regarding claims that Tencent’s game closely copied Sony’s Horizon game, Light of Motiram. The game has been removed from both Steam and the Epic Games Store, and the legal case is now closed.
Recent court filings reveal that Tencent and Sony Interactive Entertainment have settled a dispute. Tencent confirmed they’ve reached a confidential agreement, and both companies have stated they won’t be making any further public statements about the matter, according to Sean Durkin, a spokesperson for Tencent Americas, who spoke with The Verge.
Light of Motiram, released last year, immediately drew comparisons to Sony’s Horizon series due to its similar artistic style and post-apocalyptic sci-fi setting. Both games share vibrant landscapes and robotic creatures resembling animals, which led Sony to sue the game’s developer. Eventually, Sony and Tencent began talks to settle the legal issues, with Sony requesting that Tencent temporarily stop all public advertising and testing of Light of Motiram.
Reports suggest Tencent proposed a Horizon-style game set in Asia to Sony, but Sony rejected the idea. Tencent then claimed Sony’s lawsuit was an effort to unfairly control the market for games similar to Horizon. Sony countered that Tencent was using legal maneuvers to dodge responsibility for potentially copying their intellectual property.
Although the game Light of Motiram appears to have been discontinued, a new Horizon game for mobile devices is being created. Sony and NCSoft recently revealed Horizon Steel Frontiers, a massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) that will be available on both mobile and PC.
