Cyberpunk 2077 looks even better with FSR 4 on older AMD graphics cards

Gamers discovered leaked files for AMD’s FSR 4 technology earlier this week, likely released by mistake. This allowed them to try out the new upscaling feature on graphics cards that aren’t officially compatible. Reports indicate that FSR 4 significantly improves the visuals in *Cyberpunk 2077* on the Radeon RX 7900 XTX, with some claiming the image quality is nearly indistinguishable from native resolution.

FSR 4 on Radeon RX 7900 XTX shows the capabilities of the upscaler

While AMD’s FSR 4 is officially designed for the Radeon 9000 series, players have been experimenting with it using leaked files. One gamer, nuubcake11, shared their impressive results in *Cyberpunk 2077* on the r/radeon subreddit, demonstrating that FSR 4 offers a noticeable improvement over AMD’s previous upscaling technology.

We tested the game at its highest graphics settings, with ray tracing enabled, and at a 1440p resolution using two different upscaling technologies. Here are the framerates we observed:

  1. FSR 3.1.5 – approximately 84 frames per second;
  2. FSR 4 – approximately 79 frames per second.

The latest version of the upscaler has a minimal impact on frame rates, and players have noted this, expecting a more significant performance difference between the versions of AMD’s technology. Nuubcake’a11 explained that a slight decrease in frame rate is worth it for the noticeably improved image quality.

Compared to FSR3 its 500% better and to be honest I can’t tell the difference between native.

The tests suggest AMD is restricting FSR 4 to its newest graphics cards as a way to encourage people to upgrade. The recent leak of information might push AMD to release FSR 4 for older Radeon cards, including those with RDNA 3 or even RDNA 2 architecture, sooner than planned.
