Numerous TV series have featured large-scale battles, but the Battle of the Bastards from Game of Thrones stands out as particularly impactful. It was a crucial scene in the show’s story and became a legendary moment in television history, widely celebrated by fans.
Despite any criticisms, Game of Thrones was an incredibly impactful TV show during its 2011-2019 run. It remains a benchmark for fantasy series and continues to inspire television creators today.
The Battle of the Bastards isn’t just a brilliantly executed battle sequence; it’s a masterclass in storytelling during crucial moments. This episode was particularly important because the showrunners had exhausted the source material from the books and needed to create something entirely new. As an original event for the HBO series, the Battle of the Bastards stands out as truly unique.
The story centered on a fierce battle between the Stark and Bolton families, a clash that finally settled a long-standing conflict over the Starks’ home and freedom. Jon Snow, having returned, led the defense of his family and faced Ramsay Bolton in a memorable showdown. Following a large-scale fight, Jon defeated Ramsay in a one-on-one duel, securing victory for the Starks and allowing them to reclaim Winterfell.
To get ready to direct the large-scale battle between the Starks and Boltons, Miguel Sapochnik (who directed *Battle of the Bastards*) studied footage of other battles. He told Entertainment Weekly that he was particularly inspired by the film *RAN* by Akira Kurosawa.
I studied countless pitching duels, including actual game footage, to identify what strategies are effective, what causes a pitcher to falter, and what helps them stay focused. A major inspiration for this was the film *RAN* by Akira Kurosawa.
The scene was incredibly complex, requiring a large team and a full 20 days to film. Coordinating everything was a challenge, with almost 250 extras and between 60 and 80 horses involved. Extensive preparation was needed beforehand, including creating specific props for the battle (according to The Times).
We created 200 shields, each over six feet tall. For the large-scale “Battle of the Bastards” scene, we designed a phalanx formation with spears that were 16 feet long and had weighted ends to give the impression of an unbreakable army. We actually made 250 spears, anticipating some would be damaged during filming. It was a massive effort, requiring a lot of work from both men and women!
Wow, all the hard work really paid off with ‘The Battle of the Bastards’! As a huge fan, I can tell you it’s considered the most incredible battle *ever* shown on TV. It’s actually the highest-rated episode of Game of Thrones on IMDb – it has a 9.9 rating with over 244,000 votes! It’s just amazing to see how much everyone loved it.
