Randy Pitchford, the CEO of Gearbox, has faced more criticism for his response to complaints about how well Borderlands 4 runs. He suggested that players who are dissatisfied with the game’s performance should simply ask for their money back.
The highly anticipated sequel, launched on September 12th, has been met with widespread criticism from players. Many have reported frequent crashes and performance problems on platforms like Steam.
Gearbox released a patch to fix problems with the game on September 13th, but players are still reporting issues and sharing their concerns directly with Pitchford on X.
Randy Pitchford tells unhappy players to seek refunds
On September 16th, Randy Pitchford responded to a user who had struggled for days to get Borderlands 4 working properly and disagreed with some of the CEO’s earlier statements, saying:
Feel free to play the game however you like. If you’re not enjoying it, you can request a refund through Steam. Your comparison to a vehicle is a good one – it wouldn’t make sense to put a high-performance engine like a Ferrari’s into a monster truck and expect it to handle the same way.

After offering to help players improve their game’s performance, Pitchford explained that if they shared their computer’s specs, he could offer specific advice. He also defended suggesting DLSS, stating it’s an effective way to boost frame rates. He concluded that if players aren’t satisfied with the available tools or the game’s performance, they might want to consider playing a different title.
Pitchford has often faced criticism for his statements. Previously, in May, he issued an apology after suggesting that dedicated fans should be willing to spend $80 on games and would manage to afford them.
