Shortly after receiving the award for Best Action Adventure Game at The Game Awards 2025, the creators of Hollow Knight: Silksong, Team Cherry, revealed their first expansion. Called Sea of Sorrow, this nautical-themed addition to the game will be released in 2026 and will be available to all players at no cost.
Team Cherry has given fans a quick preview of their next expansion for Hollow Knight, called Sea of Sorrow, but hasn’t shared many specifics yet. They’ve confirmed it will add new locations, challenging bosses, and helpful tools. The trailer suggests players will explore both the surface and depths of a dangerous, salty sea when the expansion releases next year.
The latest trailer suggests the game Sea of Sorrow will likely take place in Pharloom Bay, a coastal area originally planned for Silksong but ultimately removed. One shot in the trailer strongly resembles a location called ‘The Lab’ within Pharloom Bay, which was shown in early concept art and maps documented on the Hollow Knight Wiki.
Team Cherry hasn’t announced a specific release date for the Sea of Sorrow expansion in 2026. Fans joking about the development process on YouTube speculate it might take seven years, potentially turning it into a separate game. Like with their previous projects, Team Cherry won’t be sharing frequent updates during development, but promises to reveal more details about Sea of Sorrow just before it launches.
