A 92-year-old woman in Japan recently became a social media sensation after winning a Tekken 8 tournament for seniors. She’s now believed to be one of the oldest people to ever win an esports competition.

The Care Esports Association, which hosts video game competitions for seniors, recently held a Tekken 8 tournament, as reported by Automaton. Players aged 70 to 90 participated in the event, which included official brackets and live commentators.

Okay, so get this – a 92-year-old woman named Hisako Sakai won a tournament! And she didn’t mess around, she absolutely crushed it playing as Claudio Serafino. I was watching the footage and it was insane! She was so calm and collected while playing, and everyone – the commentators and the viewers – were totally shocked. It was awesome to see!

According to GameSpark, Sakai confidently predicted she would win the tournament, and she delivered on that promise. She defeated 95-year-old Sadayuki Kato (playing as Armor King) in the semifinals and then won the final match against Goro Sugiyama, who used the character Lili.

Everyone expected either of the two players to win the tournament, making the 92-year-old’s impressive victory a real surprise.

Care, a group dedicated to senior wellness, promotes esports as a way to help older adults stay healthy and active. Their website explains they are working to make it easy for seniors to get involved in competitive gaming as a health benefit.

I’ve seen so many heartwarming stories like this one gaining popularity all over the world! One that really stands out is Shirley Curry – she’s this incredible gamer who started playing The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim on YouTube when she was in her 80s and became a huge star! It’s amazing, but Bethesda was so impressed with her that they’ve even said she’ll be a character in the next Elder Scrolls game! It just goes to show you’re never too old to enjoy gaming, or to become a legend!
