Wicked: For Good Passes Huge Global Box Office Milestone (But The OG Movie Did It Much Faster)

The movie Wicked: For Good is reaching a significant milestone in ticket sales. It started strong on November 21st, achieving the biggest opening weekend for a film based on a Broadway show ever. However, its performance quickly declined, with weekly ticket sales dropping more sharply than the original Wicked film.

According to Variety, Wicked: For Good is predicted to reach a worldwide box office total of $467 million by the end of its fourth weekend in cinemas. Of that amount, $312 million has come from theaters in the US, and $155 million from international theaters.

The recent performance of Wicked: For Good means it has now earned over $450 million globally after three weeks in cinemas. However, the 2024 version of Wicked reached this same amount even faster – earning $455.6 million worldwide by the end of its opening weekend, before the following weekdays had even passed.

Although For Good premiered just a few days ago, its $147 million domestic opening was significantly higher than the $112.5 million earned by Wicked. However, For Good appears to be losing momentum much faster than the original film. While Wicked ultimately grossed $758.7 million worldwide, the sequel is currently on track to earn less than $700 million.

Even though it’s being compared to the 2024 film, Wicked: For Good is doing very well in theaters. As of now, it’s the 13th highest-grossing movie worldwide this year and has already made enough money to cover its costs. With a budget of $150 million, it probably only needed to make a little over $375 million in ticket sales to become profitable.
