Be warned, this article contains spoilers for episode 4 of Heated Rivalry, titled “Rose.” While the episode itself feels somewhat unsatisfying, a seemingly minor detail – ginger ale – actually foreshadows events in Shane and Ilya’s future novels. Adapting books for television has often been unsuccessful, but HBO Max’s Heated Rivalry has become a major hit, currently boasting a 95% approval rating from critics and 91% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes.
While the show’s steamy scenes initially attract viewers, Heated Rivalry is much more than that. It’s a compelling love story between hockey rivals Shane Hollander and Ilya Rozanov, and the latest episode ends with them heading in different directions, leaving their future uncertain.
Ginger Ale Represents Shane’s True Desires In Heated Rivalry
HBO Max
Following a trip to Boston, Shane and Ilya part ways, both harboring feelings for each other but now proceeding with more caution. Shane tries to move past a long-term affair by connecting with actress Rose Landry. However, a recurring detail – ginger ale – hints that Shane will eventually return to Ilya.
Throughout the show “Rose,” Shane repeatedly tries to order ginger ale, but always ends up with something else. It’s a running gag, as his preference for the drink is well-known. He only actually gets ginger ale once – when he visits Ilya in Boston. Notably, Ilya already has it prepared for him, so Shane doesn’t even need to ask.
Ginger ale symbolizes what Shane really wants. After things with Ilya become unexpectedly intense, he worries he’ll be trapped in the relationship. He’s also still figuring out his sexuality, which makes his connection with Ilya even more difficult. Seeking a distraction, he finds it with Rose.
How Ginger Ale Spoils Shane & Ilya’s Romantic Future
One of the key choices made by the creator and director, Jacob Tierney, was to stay very close to the original story in Heated Rivalry. Because of this, viewers can anticipate that Shane and Ilya will ultimately reunite. Shane trying to change his habits – like switching from ginger ale – won’t change his true preferences. He’ll eventually understand that compromising means accepting something he doesn’t really want.
As season 1 of Heated Rivalry nears its end—with only two episodes remaining—major plot points will begin to wrap up, starting with the next-to-last episode. Viewers shouldn’t have to wait long to see Shane and Ilya interact again after their dramatic encounter in Montreal. Plus, their developing relationship will continue in season 2, which has already been confirmed.
