A Pokémon card collector nicknamed Kabuto King has amazed other fans by collecting over 1,000 copies of a single, older card.
This Kabuto card is from the 1999 Pokémon Trading Card Game expansion called Fossil. Fossil was one of the first sets ever released and featured Pokémon inspired by prehistoric creatures. It’s still a popular choice for collectors of older cards.
Everyone usually hunts for popular cards like Gengar, Dragonite, or Lapras when they open packs, but one collector has a different goal: they’re trying to find every single version of one of the few actual Fossil Pokémon in the set.
I’ve added 42 new Kabutos to my collection, bringing the total to 1042! The Kabuto Legion is growing fast. These are becoming increasingly rare, so if you’re looking to sell any, please send me a direct message.

1,000 Kabuto Pokemon cards and counting
Kabuto King is a dedicated Pokémon card collector who has gone to incredible lengths to build a massive collection. He owns 1,042 copies of the same Kabuto card from the 1999 Fossil set, which he calls his “Kabuto Legion.”
A Pokémon card collector is trying to get every first-edition Kabuto card from the old Fossil set. He recently shared an update on X (formerly Twitter), announcing he’d added 42 more cards, bringing his total collection to 1,042.
The collection includes multiple PSA 10 slabs alongside hundreds of ungraded copies.
First edition Kabuto cards from the Fossil set are generally more valuable than later, unlimited versions. Currently, ungraded cards are selling for around $2.71. Cards graded 7 or higher by PSA usually sell for over $10, and a perfect PSA 10 grade can fetch around $85.
How rare is first-edition Fossil Kabuto?
Kabuto King has already collected a huge number of cards, but he says finding more is getting tougher. Although the exact number of first-edition Kabuto cards printed in 1999 isn’t known, CGC Cards reports that 1,380 have been professionally graded by September 2025. This means over 1,000 graded cards are still out there for Kabuto King to find, but it’s becoming increasingly challenging to do so.
Kabuto is fairly common in this card set, meaning more copies of it were printed than less common or rare cards. However, that doesn’t necessarily make it easy to find when searching for cards, it just indicates its relative abundance within the set.
A quick search on eBay reveals several first edition Kabuto cards available for under $5 each, plus one Kabuto card graded PSA 9.
