As a huge fan of the IT universe, I was seriously creeped out by episode 7, “augury.” It pretty much confirmed that season 2 of Welcome to Derry is going to be even more terrifying than we thought, showing Pennywise at the height of its power. The show really didn’t hold back adapting the Black Spot fire from Stephen King’s novel – it was brutal! Seeing that event unfold, and witnessing the deaths of around twenty people, including poor Rich from the early Losers Club, was just…wow. It definitely sets the stage for a major bloodbath in the final episodes.
This all connects to what the people of Derry refer to as the “Augury.” This ominous sign has been mentioned several times in the first season of Welcome to Derry, and it typically foreshadows terrible events for the town, as it’s a deeply frightening and significant occurrence during Pennywise’s time of terror.
Why IT: Welcome to Derry’s Augury Is Bad News in Season 1

In episode 7 of IT: Welcome to Derry, around 41 minutes and 50 seconds in, Rose of the Children of Mathurin – who remembers Pennywise – states that the “Augury has passed.” This means Pennywise has finished his period of feeding that began in 1962, and is now complete.
“The Augury has passed. Its feeding cycle is complete. It sleeps.”
According to the Children of Mathurin, the augury signals a key moment in Pennywise’s cycle, typically happening near the end of its 27-year period of activity. It needs a lot of victims to prepare for its long hibernation. The augury also marks the start of Pennywise’s feeding, acting as a warning of its return to Derry, Maine.

In the seventh episode of HBO and HBO Max’s “Inside Look at IT: Welcome to Derry,” executive producer Andy Muschietti explained that auguries mark Pennywise’s most violent period, where it terrorizes the town and preys on as many people – both children and adults – as possible.
Each new phase in the IT world seems to begin and end with a major, disruptive event. These events are known as auguries, and the Black Spot is one example of them.
Everything in Season 1 has been building towards the arrival of the Black Spot, which finally appeared after many deaths. Episode 7 shockingly showed Pennywise actually eating its victims during the turmoil.

The creature’s behavior suggests a frightening escalation, where it uses intense violence to amplify and exploit people’s fears, pushing its terrifying methods to the limit, especially as it prepares to enter a dormant state.

The destruction of the Black Spot signaled the end of Pennywise’s activity during its 1962 feeding period. However, the military’s careless actions – particularly those of General Francis Shaw, whose fate may be sealed as hinted in Welcome to Derry – could trigger another crisis. Their actions prematurely woke Pennywise as it was beginning to hibernate, as shown at the end of Episode 7.
This is a first for the IT series: Pennywise looks genuinely angry at the end, and clearly intends to cause serious harm, judging by his appearance.
The trailer for the season finale of IT: Welcome to Derry showed Pennywise losing control and attacking many students at Derry High School, as well as adults. It seems Pennywise is determined to get revenge on the military for disturbing his sleep, and he’ll demonstrate his power by killing a large number of children before going back into hibernation, adding to his already extensive list of victims.
What ‘Augury’ Events Are Next in Welcome to Derry Seasons 2 & 3, Explained

The disturbing visions foreshadow that Pennywise’s evil will continue, and they hint at the frightening events of Season 2 (you can find a first look at the new season here). The ending of Episode 2 revealed that Season 2 will focus on another tragic event from Derry’s past: the Bradley Gang Massacre.
If you haven’t been following along, the latest episode ended with soldiers digging up an old car from the 1930s in Derry. This was the vehicle used by the Bradley Gang when Pennywise first began terrorizing the town back in 1935.

The Bradley Gang Massacre will be a key event in Season 2, and it’s a brutal one. According to Stephen King’s book, the people of Derry had grown tired of the gang’s criminal activity and took justice into their own hands, shooting and killing all seven members in public.
I’m absolutely horrified, but it’s been confirmed – that attack was definitely influenced by Pennywise! Several people actually saw him there, right in the middle of the gunfight, laughing like a maniac while shooting! It’s terrifying and just proves how far his evil reaches.
The show confirming the existence of the fortune teller essentially signaled the dark path season two of IT: Welcome to Derry would take, particularly with the upcoming slaughter of the Bradley Gang. Notably, the opening credits of each episode already showed a glimpse of this massacre, suggesting the show will delve deeper into these events this season.

The opening sequence of IT: Welcome to Derry also hints at the Kitchener Ironworks Explosion of 1908, a disaster even more terrifying than the Bradley Gang Massacre. Season 3 of Welcome to Derry (if it’s made) will be set in 1908 and focus heavily on this violent event.
In Stephen King’s novel, an explosion at the Ironworks factory killed 88 children and 14 adults – a total of 102 people. This tragedy, which happened during an Easter egg hunt, is one of the deadliest events caused by Pennywise and promises a particularly frightening and emotional third season.
Did the ‘IT’ Movies Have an Augury?

The IT movies didn’t feature a widespread, violent outbreak because the Losers’ Club successfully contained and ultimately defeated Pennywise in both IT: Chapter One and IT: Chapter Two. Although several characters died, there wasn’t a large-scale bloodbath or event that overwhelmed the town of Derry.
As a huge fan of the IT story, I’ve always found it fascinating that the Losers’ Club in both the 1989 and 2016 timelines ultimately beat Pennywise simply by facing their fears and being brave. It wasn’t about finding some secret weapon, like exploiting what Pennywise is afraid of – those binding shards. They were actually stronger and more effective than the characters in Welcome to Derry because they didn’t need that extra edge; courage was enough.
