Released in 1986, A Better Tomorrow follows Mark Lee, a police officer played by Chow Yun-fat, who finds himself torn between his loyalty to the law and a personal connection to Sung Tse-Ho, a powerful gangster. Tse-Ho asks for Lee’s help to get revenge for a family member’s murder. The film was critically acclaimed and helped launch the careers of director John Woo and Chow Yun-fat, eventually leading them to work in Hollywood.

Released in 1987, A Better Tomorrow 2 had a surprising plot twist intended to prove its worth – we won’t reveal it to avoid spoiling the original film for those who haven’t seen it. Similar to the first movie, it was packed with exaggerated action, numerous explosions, and a very high number of on-screen deaths when the ammunition ran low.

Released in 1989, A Better Tomorrow 3: Love and Death in Saigon served as both a conclusion to the A Better Tomorrow series and a prequel to the original film. While the story itself isn’t particularly strong, the movie features impressive action. Director John Woo initially had a different plan for the film, but left the project due to creative disagreements with Hark. Woo later developed his original ideas into the 1990 film Bullet in the Head.
