Hulk Smash Everything #1 Review: Classic Incredible Hulk Fun

Recent Hulk comics have gotten pretty complex, introducing big changes to his origin story and linking him to powerful cosmic forces. This has left a lot of fans scratching their heads. Thankfully, a new series called Hulk Smash Everything is going back to the classic, fun side of the character, and it’s really funny!

The story begins with Doctor Strange attempting to enjoy a quiet moment of reading at his home, the Sanctum Santorum. His peace is quickly broken when the Hulk unexpectedly arrives, repeatedly yelling “Hulk Smash Strange Doctor!” It’s soon discovered that this chaotic interruption is part of a new scheme by The Leader, who is once again trying to take over the world.

The plan hinges on obtaining three specific items. To get the first, the Leader decides to exploit his former foe, Hulk, by turning him into a weapon. He does this by impersonating Doctor Strange, ambushing Bruce Banner during a public talk, and causing a chaotic distraction while stealing from Doctor Strange’s home, the Sanctum Santorum.

Hulk Smash Everything a welcome return to form

Ryan North has become one of Marvel’s funniest writers recently, but he doesn’t rely on traditional jokes. Instead, he finds humor in how ridiculous the characters are. Take the Leader, for example: he constantly boasts about being a genius and having brilliant schemes, yet his plan to get Hulk’s attention involves dressing up as Doctor Strange and simply hitting Bruce Banner with a frying pan.

It’s funny enough already, but the writer remembers the comic is called ‘Hulk Smash Everything.’ Hulk doesn’t quite destroy everything by the end of the issue, but he definitely gives it his all. In fact, the story concludes with Hulk lost in time, preparing to unleash his rage on a group of dinosaurs.

Vincenzo Carratu’s artwork beautifully brings this to life. It has a slight manga feel, using quick lines to emphasize fast-paced moments, but remains firmly rooted in the energetic, colorful style of classic Marvel Comics, thanks to Federico Blee’s vibrant color work.

If you miss the days of Hulk simply destroying everything in sight, you’re in luck! “Hulk Smash Everything” is a fantastic comic that perfectly captures what makes the Hulk so great. It’s also incredibly funny, playfully poking fun at some of the genre’s most over-the-top moments.
