Tom Felton Is Such A Diva Over Draco’s New Wand, And As A Harry Potter Fan, I Love It

As a huge movie buff, I’m always amazed by how enduring the Wizarding World is – it all started with the incredible Harry Potter films, which I still revisit constantly, especially now that they’re easy to stream on HBO Max. The internet went crazy when Tom Felton signed on to reprise his role as Draco Malfoy in the Broadway production of The Cursed Child, and honestly, I’m loving the playful drama around his insistence on having things just right with his wand – he’s totally embracing the diva role, and it’s fantastic!

Felton recently debuted in The Cursed Child, resulting in the audience of the Lyric Theater screaming in joy. Like the rest of the Harry Potter cast he grew up before our eyes, and now he’s playing an adult version of Draco on Broadway. In a video for TodayTix, the 38 year-old actor spoke about how methodical he’s been about once again wielding a wand on stage. As he told it:

I’ve been working on wand designs for the past week, as I’m very particular about the one Draco uses. I don’t want to give away too many details right now, but Draco does have a new wand in the play, and it really suits the Malfoy family’s style.

This is interesting! While other actors have played Draco on Broadway, it’s unusual that Felton was so particular about the wand he used. You’d think the prop team already had a wand design from previous actors, but his experience with the Harry Potter films clearly influenced his approach. I’m really curious to find out which wand he ended up choosing!

Dedicated Harry Potter fans may remember that Harry took Draco Malfoy’s original wand during the fight at Malfoy Manor. Draco later recovered it after the Battle of Hogwarts, but it appears he now has a different wand in Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.

HBO Max offers streaming access to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter and a wide variety of other movies, shows, and documentaries. Subscriptions start at $10.99 per month for the Basic With Ads plan. See the deal here.

Later in the interview, Tom Felton talked about how much fun it was to pick up a wand and perform magic again, this time on the Broadway stage in The Cursed Child. He explained that:

Well it turns out after all the years of not using a wand I’m still fairly nifty with it.

Learning to perform stage magic felt similar to riding a bike for Tom Felton, especially when he began performing spells and duels on Broadway. Given that he started playing Draco Malfoy at a young age, that makes perfect sense.

With Felton returning to the stage for the Broadway show, more and more fans are hoping for a movie version of Cursed Child featuring the original cast. While the studio is currently prioritizing a new Harry Potter TV series and hasn’t signaled any plans for a movie, Felton’s return makes the idea feel more achievable than before.

As a huge Harry Potter fan, I’m so excited everyone can now stream the movies on HBO Max! And if you’re near a production of The Cursed Child, you can even see Tom Felton – Draco Malfoy himself! – performing with a brand new wand until May 10th. It’s amazing!
