It’s common for fans of J.R.R. Tolkien’s stories to debate which characters are the most powerful, but it’s harder to determine who was the smartest. Intelligence can be defined in many ways, and some definitions are more open to interpretation than others. For instance, Bilbo Baggins could be considered highly intelligent, as he cleverly outwitted the dragon Smaug in The Hobbit through quick thinking and resourcefulness.

While characters like Saruman and Sauron were incredibly inventive – demonstrated by creations like the Rings of Power – Tolkien made it clear who possessed the greatest knowledge of Middle-earth. That character was Elrond, Lord of Rivendell. Interestingly, two characters within the book itself confirmed this in just three words each.

The Lord of the Rings‘ Heroes Thought Highly of Elrond

In J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Fellowship of the Ring, Boromir praised Elrond as the most knowledgeable scholar of all time. Later, in The Return of the King, Aragorn called Elrond the wisest. Throughout Tolkien’s work, “lore” represents a wide range of knowledge, encompassing subjects like history, science, mythology, literature, and music.

As a huge Tolkien fan, I’ve always been fascinated by the lore-masters – or lambengolmor, sometimes just ingolmor – in his world. There were lots of smart people in Middle-earth, but being called a lore-master was a really big deal! People like Rúmil, who invented the first Elvish writing, and Pengolodh, whose writings basically became The Silmarillion, were among them. So when someone’s called the greatest of the lore-masters, like Elrond, you know they’re incredibly knowledgeable and important!

Stories and traditions were important for keeping a culture’s history alive, and they could also be very useful. When Aragorn called Elrond “the wisest in lore,” he meant that Elrond remembered an old prophecy from Malbeth the Seer. The prophecy said: “The Dead will rise; the time has come for those who broke their promises. They will stand again at the Stone of Erech and hear a horn sounding in the hills. Who will blow the horn? Who will summon them from the fading light, the lost people? It will be the descendant of the one to whom they swore their oath. He will come from the North, driven by necessity, and he will pass through the Door to the Paths of the Dead.”

This knowledge revealed to Aragorn the secret route and method for calling upon the Dead. Without this information, passed down from Elrond, he wouldn’t have been able to gather their ghostly army, and the Battle of the Pelennor Fields would likely have resulted in defeat.

Elrond Accrued Thousands of Years of Knowledge Before The Lord of the Rings

Elrond wasn’t a king, but he was incredibly wise and experienced, having lived for over 6,500 years by the time The Lord of the Rings begins. He previously worked as an advisor and deputy to the High King Gil-galad, where he mastered both healing and fighting. Later, he established Rivendell, a place filled with ancient Elven writings, and became a member of the White Council, a group of the most knowledgeable people in Middle-earth. Elrond also had the power of foresight, allowing him to see into the future.

Tolkien believed a character’s goodness reflected their intelligence, and conversely, associated evil with foolishness. As detailed in Morgoth’s Ring, a volume from The History of Middle-earth, he argued that even though characters like Saruman were technologically advanced, their wickedness actually hindered their intelligence. Despite being cunning, the villains in The Lord of the Rings often made surprisingly foolish mistakes.

In contrast, it was Elrond’s wisdom that led to the creation of the Fellowship. The famous Council of Elrond, as depicted in the film The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, wasn’t a pre-planned event. Instead, characters like Boromir and Gimli independently traveled to Rivendell seeking Elrond’s counsel. It was at this gathering that the Fellowship was formed and began its world-saving quest.
