A recent report reveals more about Disney’s plans for its next CEO. According to The Wall Street Journal, Josh D’Amaro, a top contender for the position, is particularly interested in expanding Disney’s gaming efforts. The report also indicates that Andrew Wilson, the CEO of Electronic Arts, is unlikely to be chosen for the role.
Earlier reports suggested Disney’s board was looking at people outside the company to replace Bob Iger, including John Wilson. However, a recent report indicates Disney is now leaning towards promoting someone from within the company. Meanwhile, Wilson will remain with Electronic Arts, even as the company goes through a $55 billion acquisition.
Disney’s next CEO might be Jeff D’Amaro, who currently leads the Disney Experiences division – which includes theme parks, merchandise, cruises, and video games. According to a Wall Street Journal report, D’Amaro is expected to be named CEO and plans to make video games a more important part of Disney. He’s also interested in using gaming technology throughout Disney’s creative work, but details are limited at this time.
Disney is already familiar with Epic’s Unreal Engine, using it in movie production. For example, the show The Mandalorian used this technology – the same one behind the game Fortnite – to display backgrounds on LED screens that surrounded the actors and set pieces.
As a huge Disney fan, I’m really excited to see what Bob Iger’s successor, D’Amaro, is doing with gaming! He’s already made a big splash by getting Disney to invest $1.5 billion in Epic Games – that means we can expect some awesome Fortnite collaborations in the future. He’s also talked a lot about how important gaming is for Disney’s future, and I totally agree – it’s a smart move!
According to D’Amaro, Walt Disney was a bold innovator and wasn’t afraid to take chances. He explained that Disney’s current efforts with Fortnite are a continuation of that same adventurous mindset.
He emphasized the importance of continuous innovation, stating that we can’t become complacent with previous achievements. He explained that if Disney had simply stuck with what had worked before, the company might not be around today. Because people’s tastes are always changing, he stressed that adapting to those changes is crucial for staying relevant.
Okay, so get this – Fortnite is about to get a HUGE Disney update! We’re talking characters and stuff from Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, and even Avatar showing up in the game. Epic and Disney haven’t told us exactly what they’re planning yet, but honestly, everyone’s hoping it’s like a full-on virtual Disney World inside Fortnite. I’m so hyped to see what they come up with!

Disney used to be more involved in making video games directly, with its own studio called Disney Interactive Studios. They also created the popular ‘Disney Infinity’ game, where you could use toys with the game, but that’s no longer around. Now, Disney mostly lets other companies make games using Disney characters and stories. Back in 2019, Disney’s CEO admitted they hadn’t been very successful at making and publishing games on their own.
Disney also creates games internally through its Disney Experiences team. Currently, they are hiring for four video game positions, including several producers and two engineers.
Bob Iger has stated he intends to step down from Disney by the end of 2026, and people are anticipating an announcement of his successor sometime next year. It’s worth remembering that Iger previously retired in late 2021, but returned in November 2022 after Bob Chapek, who had taken his place, was removed due to several issues.
