Ice-T, known as both an actor and rapper, has been a part of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit since 2000, playing Detective Fin Tutuola. This season also saw the return of , who had been a main cast member until December 2022.
Before the new season of SVU premieres in January, Ice-T addressed concerns about his reduced screen time, clarifying it wasn’t related to Kelli Giddish’s return. In a post on Threads, he explained that the decision came from network executives and wasn’t Kelli’s doing, stating, “That’s my girl…” He added that he fully supports the decision and is doing well, thanking fans for their concern. Ice-T also shared a post claiming that Law & Order: SVU reduced his screen time to help cover the cost of Kelli Giddish’s salary.
I was so relieved to hear Ice-T explain what happened with his role on the show, according to TMZ. Apparently, Kelli Giddish had absolutely nothing to do with any changes to his screen time. He said it was purely a business decision – bringing Kelli back meant they couldn’t afford to keep both her and him as full-time cast members. They decided to have him come and go throughout the season, which allowed them to bring her back and also introduce some new characters. It’s good to know everyone wanted Kelli back, and it wasn’t about any conflict!
Ice-T let his fans know that despite appearing in fewer episodes this season, he isn’t leaving Law & Order: SVU. He’s already thinking about Season 28! According to Ice-T, producers told him they were going to use him less this year, and he was okay with that.
Ice-T’s Reaction to his Reduced Role
Ice-T has been with the show for 27 years and doesn’t have anything bad to say about it, explaining that it’s taken care of him for a long time. He’s hoping to make it to Season 28. The chance to work on other projects, thanks to a smaller role, has been a positive, and he’s glad fans appreciate his presence on SVU.
Ice-T actually feels good that fans were disappointed with his character’s limited appearance. He explained that it would be worse if people didn’t notice he was gone! He’s happy fans wanted to see more of Fin, and assured them he’ll be appearing throughout the season, though not necessarily in every episode.
The season began in September 2025 with an episode honoring Captain Donald Cragen (Dann Florek), featuring a memorial service. Olivia Benson, played by Mariska Hargitay, attended the service and fondly remembered the captain, stating he was “the best boss that I ever had. Everything I know about being a captain, I learned from him.”
Law & Order Season 27 returns to NBC on Jan. 8, 2026.
