AI-Generated Christmas art removed after looking like “slop horror” scene

An AI-created Christmas decoration in London was taken down after people said it looked frightening, like something from a horror film.

Artificial intelligence has been increasingly influential for artists and creators, particularly with its growing ability to create images. However, AI-generated images, especially those depicting people, often still have noticeable flaws that reveal their artificial origin.

As the holidays approach, many major companies are using AI to create content. Coca-Cola’s classic ‘Holidays are Coming’ ad was once again generated by AI this year, but it’s received negative reactions from some viewers.

Two large Christmas murals in Southwark, London, received criticism for their unsettling appearance, with some describing the distorted faces as resembling a horror movie scene.

The artwork received widespread criticism on social media, particularly in local Facebook groups. One commenter questioned the piece, asking, “What is this, and how was it allowed to happen?”

One person who saw it described it as initially looking okay, but quickly revealing obvious flaws from AI generation. Another viewer jokingly pointed out a bizarre detail – a snowman with an eye located on its cheek – as an example of its strangeness.

I was reading LondonCentric, and they said the amazing murals were done by artist Mat Collishaw! Apparently, he’s really into using AI in his art – he’s even started experimenting with things like ChatGPT, which is so cool to me. He seems to really embrace the technology.

According to LondonCentric, the murals were taken down in late November, but people have continued to make fun of the situation online ever since.

While some see the work as a reflection of UK politics, the biggest criticism has focused on the fact that it was created using artificial intelligence.

Honestly, reading that comment just bummed me out. It really hit me how kinda depressing things are right now. Someone else said it’s like, the worst time to be alive, and I get what they mean. It’s a really negative thought, but it felt…true, you know?
