Assassin’s Creed Shadows Won’t Get Second DLC Expansion

So, I was really excited for more Assassin’s Creed Shadows after playing the ‘Claws of Awaji’ DLC back in September. But unfortunately, Ubisoft announced they’ve cancelled plans for the second expansion they were working on. Pretty disappointing news, honestly!

According to Ubisoft’s Simon Lemay-Comtois, there are currently no plans to expand the island of Awaji in Year Two of the game, as he told JorRaptor in an interview (via IGN).

Lemay-Comtois clarified that while they’ll continue to add content to Shadows after launch, it won’t be in the form of a traditional season pass. Instead of frequent, smaller updates, they’re planning larger, more impactful updates throughout Year Two. He explained that Year One was about quickly addressing issues and responding to player feedback with smaller releases, but now that the game is stable, they can focus on delivering substantial content drops that really change things up and give players something significant to return to.

In the past, Ubisoft released two or three expansions for each new Assassin’s Creed game. Recently, they surprised players by adding a free expansion to Assassin’s Creed Mirage, two years after the game first came out.

The ‘Claws of Awaji’ content was initially planned as a purchaseable add-on, but Ubisoft decided to release it for free as an apology for the delay of the main ‘Shadows’ game. Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot explained that the delay happened because players reacted negatively to ‘Shadows,’ particularly the choice of Yasuke, a Black samurai based on a historical person, as the game’s lead character. Meanwhile, another report revealed that a planned ‘Assassin’s Creed’ game set during the American Civil War was cancelled due to concerns it would be too controversial for a U.S. audience.

While we won’t see any more major stories following Naoe and Yasuke from Shadows, both characters appear in a special, free mission tied to a collaboration with Attack on Titan. This mission will only be available until December 22nd. Also, Assassin’s Creed Shadows is coming to the Nintendo Switch 2 on December 2nd.
