Gregory Maguire is continuing to develop the Wicked movies that Universal Pictures is interested in. HarperCollins has also revealed a new book, Galinda: A Charmed Childhood, which is a prequel to Wicked and a companion to Elphie: A Wicked Childhood. That makes it a story that fits between the prequels! The book will be available on September 29, 2026.
The new show has a similar feel to Succession, according to a summary from Deadline. It focuses on Galinda, the youngest of four children from a once-wealthy family who is both spoiled and overlooked. While Galinda excels at dance and hopes to win competitions, she doesn’t notice the growing anger of local business owners who dislike her family’s methods. Meanwhile, her father skillfully avoids traps set by his rivals as he tries to keep the family afloat.
Universal Pictures is eager to expand the world of Wicked with more films. The recent sequel has earned nearly $400 million worldwide in just 10 days and is on track to be a major box office success. According to Universal’s marketing chief, Michael Moses, the film’s popularity and dedicated fanbase create a strong desire to continue making movies set in this universe. Composer and lyricist Stephen Schwartz is open to another Oz-based musical, but not necessarily a continuation of Glinda and Elphaba’s story. He feels their arc is complete and suggests adapting material from Gregory Maguire’s original book series. Schwartz and a collaborator are currently exploring a different idea – not a direct sequel, but a related story that expands the Wicked universe in a new direction.
